Helmet Safety and Peculiar Trends Among Indonesian Riders

Share:

Wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle is mandatory in Indonesia. Every motorcycle rider is required to wear a helmet. This applies not only to the driver but also to any passenger, both of whom must wear protective headgear. This requirement is in accordance with Indonesian regulations, specifically Law Number 20 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation.

Typically, helmets used are standard models that comply with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). An SNI-compliant helmet is marked with the SNI logo. If a motorcyclist does not wear an SNI helmet or allows a passenger to ride without one, they may face penalties in the form of fines or imprisonment, as outlined in Article 291 of Law No. 22/2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation.

However, several viral videos circulating on social media have drawn attention due to the peculiar helmet styles featured, leaving many viewers baffled.

One such video, which gained traction on Instagram, shows a motorcyclist wearing a helmet fashioned from a magic com or rice cooker.

In the footage, the helmet worn by the rider is white and pink and even includes a ladle. It was later revealed that the man had placed an old helmet inside the unused rice cooker for this purpose.

Another viral video, this time shared on social media platform, captures a similarly unusual scene.

A man, seen riding an electric motorcycle on a public road, sparked online amusement. Netizens became distracted by the peculiar helmet he was wearing, which resembled an old television tube. The man, dressed in a yellow shirt, attracted widespread attention for his unconventional choice of headgear.

Further clarification is provided in Article 291, Paragraph 2. Any individual operating a motorcycle who allows their passenger to ride without a helmet, as referenced in Article 106, Paragraph 8, may be subject to a maximum of one-month imprisonment or a fine of up to IDR 250,000.

Why Wearing a Helmet Is Essential When Riding a Motorcycle

Many people hold the misconception that helmets are unnecessary for short-distance journeys. In reality, accidents can occur at any time and in any place, regardless of the distance travelled. Whether one is heading to the local shop, visiting a friend, or simply riding around the neighbourhood, head protection remains crucial.

Protecting the Face (Especially the Eyes) from Wind, Dust, and Debris

This is another essential function. Motorcyclists frequently lose focus due to minor distractions encountered on the road. Even seemingly small inconveniences can have serious consequences. For this reason, it is important to wear a helmet that meets the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).

Moreover, weather conditions can change unexpectedly. Intense heat may cause dizziness, while strong winds can lead to a cold if the head is left exposed. Wearing a helmet ensures greater comfort even on short trips, shielding riders from such external elements.

Avoiding Penalties

Even during a short journey, encountering police without a helmet can result in being issued a fine. The regulation requiring helmet use is enforced universally, whether the journey is long or brief.

In addition to avoiding a fine that might strain your finances, wearing a helmet demonstrates that you are a law-abiding motorist. This sets a positive example and can encourage others to adopt safer habits. There is no disadvantage to consistently wearing a helmet.

Protecting the Head During an Accident

This remains the helmet’s most critical function. While no one can guarantee complete safety, helmets play a vital role in protecting the head during a collision, whether with asphalt, a tree, a road barrier, or another vehicle.

Adopting the habit of wearing a helmet could ultimately save lives, as misfortunes often occur without warning. Do not neglect to wear one, even for brief outings—it could provide the protection you most need when the unexpected happens.
