A viral video uploaded by a foreign tourist has drawn public attention to the worsening abrasion at Kuta Beach. The video showed sections of the beach heavily affected by erosion, with seawater reaching areas near the jogging track along the coastline.
“Very sad for Kuta Beach,” the foreigner wrote in the video.
The uploader, identified by the account @smithersgnome17, also stated that the beach could disappear if the erosion continues. According to the video, high tides had already reached the jogging track in several areas.
The post quickly circulated on social media and received comments from residents and tourists who expressed concern over the changing condition of the beach.
“One netizen wrote, ‘Is that serious? Crazy, the beach sand is eroding so fast that the beach is no longer visible.”
Another commenter shared memories of the area and linked the worsening erosion to development in southern Bali.
“It’s a bit sad. I’m originally from Kuta, born in Kuta. When I was a child, Kuta Beach was much better, and my friends and I often played football until almost evening, accompanied by a beautiful sunset. In my opinion, the erosion got worse after the airport carried out reclamation. It’s really sad to see my home like this,” the comment read.
Abrasion Continues to Affect the Coastline
Abrasion at Kuta Beach has become more visible during periods of high tide, especially around the full moon and seasonal wave changes. Strong waves continue to hit the shoreline and gradually reduce the beach area.
The erosion has caused the shoreline to retreat and damaged several public facilities located near the coast. Some sections of the jogging track have tilted, collapsed, or disappeared after being struck by waves.
The affected coastline stretches for around 5.3 kilometres, while the abrasion rate is estimated to reach approximately two metres per year.
The condition has raised concern because Kuta Beach remains one of Bali’s most visited tourist destinations. The beach is known for its long coastline, sunset views, and tourism facilities that attract domestic and international visitors.
Officials Monitor Damage and Carry Out Temporary Mitigation
Kuta Beach Tourist Attraction Manager I Nyoman Arya Arimbawa said the abrasion had become more severe in recent weeks due to high waves during the peak of the full moon.
“Regarding abrasion, Kuta Beach is currently in quite bad shape. The past few weeks, especially during the peak of the full moon, saw quite high waves, and some areas looked critical. But this isn’t new abrasion. It’s happened before, but it’s just worse this week,” Arya Arimbawa told RRI.CO.ID on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
Authorities have previously installed breakwaters in the southern part of the beach to reduce wave impact and slow erosion. However, the long-term effectiveness of the structures remains uncertain.
While waiting for further programmes from the central government, temporary mitigation measures are continuing along the coast. Sand dredged from offshore areas is being returned to the shoreline to help maintain the beach and protect nearby infrastructure.
