Viral: Bali Expat Running Community Accused of Discriminating Against Indonesian Participants

Share:

A running event organised by a community in Canggu, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, has come under public scrutiny after allegations of discrimination against Indonesian citizens (WNI) circulated widely on social media.

The controversy emerged after screenshots of conversations between prospective participants and the organisers were shared online.

The screenshots appeared to show that applications were treated differently based on the applicant’s nationality, prompting criticism from members of the public and raising questions over the event’s selection process and regulatory compliance.

Viral Screenshots Prompt Public Criticism

According to screenshots circulating on Instagram, one applicant who identified as a German citizen was accepted to join the running community. In contrast, another applicant, who stated they were an Indonesian citizen, received approval for their application but was reportedly informed that they could not join the community.

The screenshots quickly spread across social media, with many users alleging that the organisers had discriminated against Indonesian citizens by favouring foreign nationals. The incident has fuelled wider discussions about inclusivity within expatriate communities operating in Bali.

In addition to the allegations of discrimination, social media users also questioned whether the organisers had obtained the necessary permits to hold the running event, particularly as the activity was alleged to have taken place on public roads and in public spaces.

Badung Public Order Agency Says No Recommendation Was Issued

Responding to the controversy, Head of the Badung Regency Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, said the agency had not been approached by the organisers regarding the event.

“From us, Satpol PP, until now we have never been contacted, let alone given a recommendation,” he said on Friday (24 July 2026).

Suryanegara explained that his office is currently coordinating with the relevant authorities to determine the regulatory provisions governing events of this nature.

“What is certain is that we are still consulting with the legal department regarding the regulations, in accordance with the regional regulations and regent regulations that we are guided by,” he said.

He added that organisers intending to use public roads for activities that could disrupt traffic or other road users are required to obtain recommendations from the relevant authorities before proceeding.

“What is certain is that the use of public roads for activities that disrupt the activities of other users must receive recommendations or attention from the agencies or officials who handle it,” he said.

Authorities Continue Reviewing Regulatory Requirements

The Public Order Agency has not announced whether further action will be taken against the organisers. However, the agency confirmed that it is continuing to examine the applicable regulations while coordinating with the legal department.

As public attention remains focused on the incident, the viral screenshots have sparked broader debate over the management of community events in Bali, particularly those involving expatriate groups and the use of public spaces.

The allegations have also highlighted the importance of transparent participant selection processes and compliance with local regulations when organising public events.
