FIFA Appoints Jakarta as Regional Hub for Southeast and East Asia

Jakarta has officially been designated as FIFA’s regional activity centre for Southeast Asia and East Asia.

The announcement follows the signing of the Host Country Agreement (HCA) between the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) and FIFA at the newly established office in Jakarta.

As a Asia Hub, the Jakarta office will serve as a strategic connector for FIFA offices in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), and New Delhi (India).

This hub is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting football development across 21 member associations within the Southeast and East Asian regions.

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir emphasised the significance of this designation, not only for Indonesia but for the broader Asian football community.

“This is a historic day for Indonesia and also Asia for the trust in us and the countries in Asia whose football continues to advance,” said Erick Thohir, as quoted from the official PSSI website on Thursday, 19 June 2025.

“With this latest HCA, the FIFA Hub in Jakarta is not only for Indonesia but also a centre for Southeast Asia and East Asia which includes 21 member associations.”

The agreement was signed following the FIFA Executive Football Summit 2025 held in Miami, United States. It complements the Host City Agreement previously formalised in November 2023.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports is expected to legally ratify the agreement, in coordination with both PSSI and FIFA.

Erick Thohir further stated that elevating Jakarta’s status within FIFA’s organisational framework reflects an expanded mandate.

“Upgrading the status of the FIFA Hub in Jakarta will make its role much bigger than just supporting Indonesian football, but Asia as a whole,” he added.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed support for the initiative, reiterating that the global development of football must be inclusive and well-distributed.

“The growth of football should not just happen in one region, but should be evenly distributed around the world,” he said.

Indonesia Receives FIFA Forward Gold Award

In addition to the regional hub announcement, Indonesia has also been recognised with the FIFA Forward Gold Award, highlighting its effective utilisation of FIFA’s development funding.

The Awards were introduced in 2023 to honour national associations demonstrating the best use of the FIFA Forward programme.

FIFA Forward is a global grant initiative launched in 2016, aimed at strengthening football infrastructure and governance in member nations.

The programme has distributed approximately USD 2.8 billion to all six FIFA confederations, encompassing 211 member associations, including Indonesia.

Indonesia’s top recognition under the Gold category is attributed to its successful implementation of key projects, notably the construction of the PSSI National Training Centre at the future Indonesian capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN).

This project alone utilised USD 5.4 million (approximately IDR 88.1 billion) in FIFA Forward funds.

“This award is a history for Indonesian football, as well as increasing our enthusiasm to continue to build Indonesian football even bigger in the future,” said Erick Thohir.

“The success achieved by PSSI is a collaboration of various parties including the support of the government and FIFA.

Thank you FIFA President, Mr Gianni Infantino, for always believing and supporting PSSI in building Indonesian football.”
