Australian Man Found Living in Abandoned Building in Bali Receives Medical Treatment

An Australian national was found living in an abandoned building in Bali with an injured leg, prompting intervention from local authorities and the Australian Consulate.

The man was discovered at a vacant property on Sunset Road in Legian, Kuta, Badung. Local officials said he appeared to be in poor health and had difficulty walking due to a leg condition.

The Commander of the Badung Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) Team at the Kuta base, I Wayan Suantara, said his team was first contacted by the Australian Consulate on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, to check on the individual.

“It’s true that a middle-aged foreigner was found. He’s in ill health. Sick in the sense that his leg hurts, he can’t walk. It’s possible that the wound is infected,” Suantara said when contacted on Friday, 17 April.

Authorities then visited the location to assess the situation and offer assistance.

Initial Refusal of Medical Treatment

During the initial visit, officers attempted to persuade the man to seek medical care. However, he declined the offer to be taken to hospital.
“We tried to persuade the guest to go to the hospital. But the guest refused. He refused at the time,” Suantara said.

Officials noted that the refusal may have been influenced by personal circumstances. Suantara said the man had expressed distrust following a previous experience involving a local acquaintance.

“He has a local friend. Coincidentally, he also has a motorcycle. It’s still with this friend, this local friend,” he said.

According to Suantara, the man indicated that the motorcycle had not been returned, which may have contributed to his reluctance to accept assistance.

Consular Assistance and Hospital Treatment

Following the initial assessment, the man requested contact with the Australian Consulate. Local authorities coordinated with consular officials to arrange further support.

On Wednesday, 15 April, representatives from the Australian Consulate met the individual. During this visit, he agreed to receive medical treatment.

He was then referred to Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital for further examination and care related to his leg condition. Authorities confirmed that he is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The case is now being handled by the Australian Consulate, which is providing assistance in coordination with local authorities.
