An Indonesian man has been arrested in West Java after allegedly holding his girlfriend captive in a rented room for three years, subjecting her to horrific physical abuse that has shocked the nation.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Taufik Hidayat, was apprehended by West Java Regional Police in Majalaya after a brief spell on the run. His victim, a 29-year-old woman identified by her initials YTR (referred to in some local reports as YTT), is currently fighting for her life in intensive care, having suffered severe injuries including partial blindness, speech impairment, a cleft upper lip, and an inability to walk.
West Java Regional Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan, confirmed that the abuse was paired with significant financial loss. The suspect systematically stole the victim’s personal valuables and assets, totalling an estimated 52 million IDR (£2,500).
The grim reality of the situation only came to light earlier this month, July 2026, sparking widespread outrage and prompting calls for maximum sentences from human rights groups and high-profile legal advocates across Indonesia.
The Chronology of the Crime:
The Disappearance (2023)
The victim first met the suspect at a music concert in Tritan Point. After Hidayat made a single visit to her parents’ home in Rancaekek, the victim suddenly ceased all contact with her family. Previously, she had been returning home every single week.
Silenced by Threats (Mid-2024)
Having noticed her absence for over a year, the victim’s family launched a missing persons appeal on social media. The post quickly went viral, but the family was forced to take it down after receiving anonymous, threatening messages from an unknown phone number, which they now strongly suspect came from Hidayat.
The Hospital Notification (12 June 2026)
The victim’s family received a mysterious WhatsApp message alerting them that YTR was in the Emergency Department at Hasan Sadikin Hospital (RSHS) in Bandung. Upon arrival, family members discovered her alone with catastrophic injuries. It was later revealed she had been dumped there by the suspect and a boarding house keeper. The family immediately reported the matter to the West Java Regional Police.
Hospital staff confirmed the victim suffered cigarette burns, deep lacerations from sharp blades, and severe psychological trauma. Her right eye is heavily infected, her left eye has shrunk and lost vision entirely, and a part of her upper lip is missing. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has stepped in, forming a specialised medical team to handle her treatment and eventual facial reconstruction surgery.
Tragic Condition Revealed (18 June 2026)
Medical updates and statements from the victim’s brother, Syahrul Ulum, laid bare the extent of the torture. Doctors worked to clear severe, infected wounds and deep pus accumulations in YTR’s head caused by blunt force trauma. Neighbours revealed that the couple had moved to the Cileunyi area in March, where the suspect kept the victim padlocked inside a room whenever he left for work.
Public Outrage & Celebrity Campaign (22 June 2026)
With the suspect continuously evading police raids, a wave of prominent Indonesian celebrities and public figures, including musicians Melanie Subono, actor Denny Sumargo, and high-profile lawyer Hotman Paris, joined a massive social media campaign. They broadcast the suspect’s photos and details of the gruesome room to their millions of followers, urging the public to search for him.
Arrest and Detention (23 June 2026)
Following the immense pressure, police caught up with Hidayat at a relative’s house in Majalaya after he briefly fled to Tangerang. West Java Police confirmed that Hidayat tested negative for narcotics but admitted to consuming heavy local alcohol before beating his partner. He has been placed in a solitary, CCTV-monitored cell for his own protection due to intense public fury.
Investigators stated that the suspect is being prosecuted under Article 466 of the 2023 Indonesian Criminal Code relating to severe, aggravated assault, alongside ongoing assessments regarding potential historical victims.
