Indonesian fishermen at Sendang Biru Beach in Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency, took swift action after a whale shark was accidentally caught in their fishing net. The incident happened on Friday, 10 April 2026, during a routine fishing trip.

The moment gained attention after a video shared by the crew of KM Mutiara went viral on social media. The footage shows the fishermen hauling in their net before noticing the large marine animal trapped inside.

Their focus immediately shifted.

After moving their catch onto the boat, several crew members jumped into the sea to deal with the situation. They worked quickly and carefully to untangle the net that restricted the whale shark’s movement.

Within seconds, the animal was freed. It swam away towards open water, leaving behind a moment that many online viewers later praised.

Local Response and Public Reactions

Julia Dewi Ayu Sandra, a resident of Sendang Biru, said her sister was among the crew on board at the time. She explained that the incident was purely accidental.

“Yes, it wasn’t intentional; it got in by itself when the fishermen were casting their nets in the reef. It happened last Friday,” Julia told detikJatim on Saturday, 11 April 2026.

The rescue quickly drew attention online, with many netizens praising the fishermen’s response and awareness of marine conservation.

One comment read, “Salute! A real example of sea heroes. May your livelihood be even more blessed after this noble act.”

Another added, “Thank you, my brother. Protect your marine life, because there is a link in the chain of life. Protect your ocean, because you earn your living from marine resources…including coral reefs.”

The response reflects growing public concern about protecting marine ecosystems, especially species such as whale sharks, which are protected in Indonesian waters.
