A teacher in Bojonegoro is drawing attention for a simple but meaningful daily habit: running four kilometres to school.

Ahmad Zaki Febiansyah, a Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) teacher at Kasiman 1 Junior High School, has chosen to run from his home in Padangan District to his workplace in Kasiman. He does so not as a statement, but as a practical choice.

Each morning, Zaki sets off wearing his standard brown civil servant uniform rather than sportswear. He runs along the route as part of his normal commute.

“It’s quite close, so I choose to run. It just so happens that running has been my hobby since third grade,” he said.

His decision aligns with the Bojonegoro Regency Government’s “Bike to Work” policy, which requires civil servants living within seven kilometres of their workplace to use active transport every Monday. While most opt for bicycles, Zaki has taken a different approach.

For him, the run is both transport and training. It allows him to stay active without needing extra time outside his work schedule.

More Than Just a Commute

Zaki’s choice reflects his background as an accomplished runner. He has secured several achievements, including first place at the Central Java Open National Championship, a gold medal at the PPLM National Championship, and silver medals at the National Sports Week (POMNAS) and East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov).

He also finished first in the Citraland Marathon 42-kilometre category and placed second in a 70-kilometre ultra marathon.

Despite these achievements, his daily run remains simple and consistent.

It is not about competition or recognition, but about maintaining a routine.
His actions have also started to influence those around him. During the first week of the policy, he ran alone. By the second week, he had company.

“The first week I ran alone, but now I have a friend,” he said, referring to Adji, a Guidance and Counselling (BK) teacher who has since joined him.

Zaki’s approach shows that workplace policies can be adapted in practical ways. His routine supports both fitness and efficiency, while also encouraging others to take small steps towards a more active lifestyle.
