An Australian tourist identified by the initials DL, aged 31, survived a fall from the third-floor balcony of a hotel on Jalan Saraswati III, Padang Sambian Klod, West Denpasar, Bali, following an argument with his girlfriend in the early hours of Sunday, 27 July 2025.
According to local police, the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. WITA, when the tourist allegedly attempted to end his life by jumping from the hotel’s third-floor balcony.
Fortunately, he landed on the roof of the second-floor housekeeping office, preventing fatal injuries.
“The victim attempted suicide by jumping from the third-floor balcony of the hotel where he was staying. Fortunately, the victim landed on the second-floor balcony, so he could be saved,” stated AKP I Ketut Sukadi, Head of Public Relations for Denpasar Police, in a statement to Detiknews on Sunday (27 July).
The altercation between DL and his partner, identified only as C, reportedly took place inside their hotel room at around 4:00 a.m. The reason for the dispute remains unknown.
However, the heated exchange was loud enough to be heard by other guests and hotel staff.
A security guard on duty that night, told police he had previously advised a group of foreign guests at the hotel bar to lower their voices.
“They were under the influence of alcohol and their voices were loud, so the witness suggested they keep it down to avoid disturbing other guests,” AKP Sukadi explained on Monday, 28 July 2025.
Australian Tourist Survives Fall from Third-Floor Hotel Balcony
After returning to their rooms, further noise was later reported from the third floor by a hotel employee. Upon investigation later reported from the third floor further noise, the security guard discovered DL lying face-down on the roof structure of the second floor. He had apparently jumped but survived the fall with non-fatal injuries.
“The victim survived. It is suspected that the victim jumped from the third-floor balcony in an attempted suicide, but his body fell and got stuck on the second floor,” added Sukadi.
Hotel staff immediately contacted an on-call doctor, but due to the complexity of the evacuation, assistance was requested from the Badung Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). DL was then transported to the BMCC Kuta Hospital for further medical attention.
Sukadi confirmed that the Australian tourist sustained a fracture to the tailbone but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. “As of now, he is still being treated at the hospital,” he said. Police noted that DL is now able to resume his activities and is expected to remain at the hotel until 2 August 2025.
“The exact motive behind the altercation between DL and his girlfriend is still being investigated by the police,” concluded Sukadi.
