A video of a Honda Scoopy motorcycle incident, driven by an Australian tourist crashing into a shop in the Kuta area of Badung has surfaced. The store’s glass shattering on contact is shown on the CCTV clip, drawing adjacent customers’ attention.

According to Kuta Police Chief Yogie Pramagita, the motorbike driver engaged in the incident is an 18-year-old Australian citizen named AGB.

“It was an unfortunate accident caused by [the driver] losing control [of the vehicle],” Pramagita explained on the 22nd of May, 2023.

The incident happened on the 22nd of May 2023, at about 11:30 p.m. near the Benesari crossroads. According to the police chronology of events, AGB was driving the motorcycle with her two companions seated behind her as they travelled from Benesari Road to Kuta Beach Road.

AGB planned to turn right and head toward Bemo Corner at the junction. Unfortunately, she didn’t make a complete circle before revving the engine and slamming through the glass front window of Ni Kadek Sudianti’s tobacco shop, Bako Dewata.

The impact of the crash is out of view of the camera that captured the incident, but the sound of glass — reported to be 13mm thick — shattering can be heard clearly in the clip. A man, believed to be the shop owner, saw the whole thing unfold before approaching the scene.

The incident cracked the glass and inflicted an estimated IDR 5.8 million (USD 390) damage to the tobacco store.

“The Scoopy motorbike rider suffered minor chin injuries and leg scrapes. The incident was resolved amicably, with the motorbike rider compensating for the store’s damage,” Paramagita added.

Bali police remind all foreigners that an incident like this is why all tourists must obtain an international driver’s licence to rent a motorbike in Bali. Since an incident like this always happens, it is essential to note that using a helmet, knowing how to drive, and not violating any traffic law is important for our safety.
