A video showing a foreign national allegedly refusing to pay for a meal at a coffee shop in Central Jakarta has attracted widespread attention on social media.
The footage was shared on TikTok and later circulated across several platforms, prompting discussion among internet users. According to information shared by the TikTok account @bbbbbbbbble, the incident reportedly took place in the Menteng area of Central Jakarta.
In the video, a man identified as a foreign national is seen walking away while a person recording the footage repeatedly asks him to settle his bill.
“Pay first, pay first,” the person recording the video can be heard saying several times.
The man then responds by refusing to make the payment. In the video, he links his decision to what he claims are his contributions to Indonesia.
“I won’t pay. I’ve given so much to this country. Look at the development around here, the tall buildings, shopping centres, and even the large hotels that are standing now,” the man says.
The footage shows the man continuing to walk away despite repeated requests for payment.
As the recording continues, the person behind the camera comments on the situation.
“Here’s a foreigner eating but refusing to pay. It’s truly surprising,” he says.
Coffee Shop Employee Describes Incident
Information circulating online states that the incident occurred at a coffee shop on Jalan Taman Kebon Sirih Dua in the Tanah Abang area of Central Jakarta.
According to a coffee shop employee, the foreign national initially attempted to pay the bill, which amounted to Rp94,000.
However, the transaction was reportedly unsuccessful because of a problem with his credit card.
The employee said the customer became angry after being asked to complete the payment.
The foreign national allegedly refused to settle the bill and continued to argue with staff members.
To prevent the situation from escalating into a larger dispute, the employee eventually allowed the man to leave the premises without making the payment.
No further details regarding the customer’s identity have been publicly disclosed.
It also remains unclear whether any formal report was filed following the incident.
Netizens and Public Figures Respond
The video quickly generated reactions from social media users, many of whom questioned the reasoning given by the man in the footage.
Several users argued that claims about contributing to development projects had no connection to the obligation to pay for goods and services received.
One social media user wrote, “Wouldn’t it be simpler if we had already eaten, just to pay for it?”
The video also drew attention from comedian Pandji Pragiwaksono, who commented on the incident through his social media account.
According to Pandji, disputes involving unpaid food bills are not uncommon. However, he considered the explanation given in the video unusual.
“When it comes to refusing to pay for food, this is a different category than usual,” Pandji wrote.
As the video continued to circulate online, the discussion focused largely on personal responsibility and customer obligations when purchasing food and beverages.
