Police Investigate Fire That Destroyed 10 Villas in Bali on New Year’s Day

A fire destroyed 10 villas in Bali, at the Villa Desa Harmonis complex on Jalan Tegal Sari, Labuan Sait, Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung, in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Thursday (1 January 2026).

The Bali Police said the fire was allegedly caused by sparks from fireworks set off by a guest staying at the villa complex. The sparks are believed to have struck the thatched roof of one of the buildings, allowing the fire to spread quickly.

“The cause of the fire is suspected to be sparks from fireworks hitting the thatched roof of the villa,” Bali Police Public Relations Chief Senior Commissioner Ariasandy said, as quoted by Liputan6.

According to police information, the fire began when a guest staying in room five ignited fireworks in the area in front of the room. Security personnel reportedly warned the guest about the activity. However, the fireworks continued to be set off.

The sparks later reached the roof of the villa, which was made of flammable materials. The fire then spread to neighbouring units within the complex.

Deky Hardianto, a security guard at Villa Desa Harmonis, said he attempted to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher. He was assisted by several guests who tried to douse the flames using water from the swimming pool.

Despite these efforts, the fire continued to grow and eventually engulfed multiple villa units. The rapid spread of the fire made it difficult to control before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Another witness, I Ketut Darsana, who is a relative of the landowner, said he became aware of the incident after seeing a fire engine passing through the area. When he arrived at the villa complex, the fire had already spread extensively.

Seven fire engines from the Badung Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters worked for approximately three hours and 30 minutes before the fire was fully brought under control.

Police Advise Villa Management to File Official Report

Senior Commissioner Ariasandy confirmed that no fatalities were reported in the incident. All guests and staff were able to evacuate safely.

“There were no fatalities in this incident. However, 10 villa units and their contents were burned, and the losses are still being assessed,” Ariasandy said.

Police later estimated the material losses from the fire at around IDR 3 billion. The estimate covers damage to the villa structures and their contents.

Following the incident, police officers visited the location to secure the area. They also conducted initial interviews with witnesses, including security staff and individuals present at the villa complex at the time of the fire.

An official report has been prepared as part of the preliminary investigation. Police have advised the management of Villa Desa Harmonis to file a formal report with the South Kuta Police to allow further legal and technical investigations to proceed.

“The police have taken steps by visiting the location, questioning witnesses, and documenting the incident,” Ariasandy said.

Authorities have not announced any charges related to the incident. The investigation remains focused on establishing the sequence of events leading up to the fire.
