Over 2,334 Houses Submerged Due to Floods in Bandung and 400 Residents Forced to Evacuate

Floods hit Bandung on Friday, 12th January 2024, affecting hundreds of houses in the Apandi area of Braga. The latest data from the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) indicates that over 2,334 residents’ houses were damaged due to floods in Bandung.

The primary cause of the flooding in Bandung was the uncontrollable overflow of the Cikapundung River, leading to the evacuation of more than 400 residents.

Residents reported that the flash flood occurred around 5:45 PM local time, resulting from the breach of the embankment on the Cikapundung River. Heavy rainfall during the weekend in the city of Bandung contributed to an increased water volume, causing the flood height in Bandung to reach 60-70 cm.

Braga Street, a renowned tourist icon in Bandung, had to be temporarily closed due to the flash flood phenomenon. Numerous videos depicting the floods in Bandung circulated on the internet, showing residents attempting to salvage their belongings and evacuate the affected areas.

The flood impact was not limited to the Braga area; the Tamansari area also experienced flooding. A total of 250 people from 100 families had to be evacuated due to the flood.

The thick mud brought by the flood necessitated extensive cleaning efforts by every resident. Following this flood incident, it was revealed that the embankment on the Cikapundung River had not undergone repairs in the past 20 years, potentially contributing to its breach.

The Acting Mayor of Bandung, Bambang Tirtoyuliono, stated, “The embankment was last repaired in 2004. If we receive reports from residents about its collapse, it’s overdue for maintenance. Tomorrow, we will raise and reinforce the embankment structure to enhance its load-bearing capacity.”

To address the issue, the Bandung government has planned immediate repairs to the Cikapundung River embankments in the coming week to prevent future flooding. Additionally, the government has mobilized various resources, including setting up refugee camps and emergency public kitchens, to aid the communities affected by the floods in Bandung.
