Deadly Accident at Ciawi Toll Gate: Eight Killed in Chain Collision

A tragic accident occurred at the Ciawi Toll Gate in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, resulting in the deaths of eight people. The incident, which involved a series of collisions between six vehicles, was captured in a viral video on social media.

According to a man who filmed the incident, the accident occurred due to a truck with a broken brake. He described the chaotic scene, saying, “Ciawi Toll Gate accident, Ciawi Toll Gate, broken brakes, broken brakes, duh a lot, don’t know how many victims there are. Ciawi Toll Gate, the accident just now, it was bad.”

The chain reaction began when a gallon truck collided with six other vehicles at the Ciawi Toll Gate on the Bogor-Jakarta route in Katulampa Village, Bogor City.

The deadly crash took place at around 11:30 pm. As reported by Kompas, Ahmad Yani, the Acting Director General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, expressed his condolences, stating that the gallon truck hit six other vehicles, including minibuses.

Following the accident, emergency services rushed to the scene, evacuating the vehicles and victims. Kompol Yudiono confirmed that all the victims had been taken to Ciawi Regional General Hospital. The truck driver, who caused the accident, was found unconscious and has not yet regained consciousness.

Traffic Disruptions

In response to the accident, Jasa Marga, the toll road operator, announced temporary closures at Ciawi Toll Gate 2. The toll gates at Gardu 07, 05, 03, and 01 were closed while repairs were underway. Drivers were advised to use the left lanes of Gardu 11, 13, and 09.

“04.00 WIB #Tol_Jagorawi GT Ciawi 2 Gardu 07, 05, 03 and 01 direction Jakarta CLOSED TEMPORARILY repair process. USE the left lane of Gardu 11, 13 and 09, please be careful and orderly in the queue,” Jasa Marga posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The accident left behind a significant amount of destruction. Six vehicles were involved, three of which were completely burned, while the other three sustained heavy damage. In total, eight people were killed, and 11 others were injured.

Current Traffic Conditions

By Thursday morning (February 5), traffic had cleared up significantly. According to Google Maps and the Travoy application by Jasa Marga, traffic was smooth beyond the Ciawi Toll Gate, with only minor delays around the toll entry point.

There was a queue of vehicles about 300 meters long, marked by red and yellow indicators, but after this, traffic flowed smoothly towards Jakarta.

This tragic event has prompted further safety reviews on the toll road, and authorities continue investigating the cause of the truck’s brake failure.
