Indonesia’s Immigration to Gradually Implement 100% E-Passports

Share:

A new era in Indonesia’s immigration system begins today with the gradual implementation of 100% electronic passport (e-passport) issuance in 13 immigration offices. This policy marks a major step towards modernizing international travel documents in accordance with global standards.

Acting Director General of Immigration Saffar M. Godam explained that the issuance of e-passports started from 13 Immigration offices that served as pilots. Later, all Immigration offices in Indonesia will implement the policy.

“As of December 1, 2024, all Indonesian citizens who apply for a passport at 13 designated Immigration offices will automatically get an electronic passport. In the future, we plan to implement it in all immigration offices in Indonesia,” Godam said, as Antara reported.

The implementation of electronic passports or e-passports began at 13 immigration offices in Indonesia starting December 1, 2024.

The 13 immigration offices designated as pilots include Soekarno Hatta Immigration Office, South Jakarta Immigration Office, West Jakarta Immigration Office, Medan Immigration Office, Batam Immigration Office, Makassar Immigration Office, Tangerang Immigration Office, and Surabaya Immigration Office.

Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, East Jakarta Immigration Office, Central Jakarta Immigration Office, North Jakarta Immigration Office and Tanjung Priok Immigration Office.

Godam explained that the advantages of Electronic Passports include higher security, minimizing the risk of misuse, and a faster immigration process, especially in a number of countries that have adopted automatic passport inspection systems using chip readers.

Advantages of E-Passports

One of the advantages of e-passports is higher security, which minimizes the risk of misuse.

Not only that, Godam said, but e-passports have also become an international standard in travel documents. He said that almost all countries have used e-passports as valid state travel documents.

Here are the advantages of e-passports:

  • Higher Security: Reduces the risk of forgery and misuse.
  • Fast Immigration Process: Supports automated checks in e-passport user countries.
  • International Standards: Makes Indonesian passports on par with travel documents of developed countries.

This policy is the first step towards the full implementation of e-passports in all immigration offices in Indonesia. In addition to increasing security, e-passports make it easier for Indonesian citizens to travel abroad, especially in countries with fast-track facilities for e-passport users.
