Caught in Kemang Jam, Foreigner Takes Initiative to Direct Traffic

Share:

Severe traffic congestion hit Jalan Kemang Raya in South Jakarta on Thursday afternoon (30 October) after heavy rain flooded the area. Water levels reaching up to 35 centimetres submerging parts of the road, leaving vehicles stranded in both directions.

Amid the gridlock, a surprising scene drew attention. A foreign national was seen getting out of his car and helping to direct traffic alongside other motorists. His actions, captured on video by bystanders, quickly circulated on social media.

In the footage, the man appears calm and composed as he makes hand signals to guide drivers through the waterlogged road. Motorists nodded in response and followed his directions. Witnesses said he took turns directing cars and motorbikes so traffic could move more smoothly at the narrowest point.

“He got out of his car and started helping,” said one motorist. “At first, people didn’t realise what he was doing, but then everyone followed his lead.”

Working with Security Guards

The foreigner reportedly stepped out of his vehicle after being stuck for nearly an hour in the jam. His car had just exited a shopping complex and was heading towards Jalan Kemang Raya.

He then joined local security guards and other drivers in managing the situation. Together, they guided traffic at the choke point where motorbikes and cars were jostling to pass. Once the congestion began to ease, the man returned to his vehicle and continued his journey.

According to several witnesses, his spontaneous effort helped clear the queue before police officers arrived at the scene.

“He wasn’t loud or bossy,” said a security guard who assisted him. “He just gave simple hand signals, and people listened.”

Flood and Traffic Diversion

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Management Centre (TMC) confirmed that the flood had reached around 30–35 centimetres.

“Water is around 30–35 cm deep on Jalan Kemang Raya, South Jakarta,” the TMC account posted at 4:04 p.m. WIB on Thursday.

As a result, traffic from Jalan Prapanca heading towards Kemang was diverted towards Antasari. The police also advised motorists from Blok O to continue straight rather than turning left into Kemang.

“Traffic from Blok O turning left towards Kemang will be diverted towards Antasari,” the TMC wrote.

Flooding is a Regular Problem

Residents say flooding in Kemang has become a recurring issue whenever heavy rain falls for long periods. Poor drainage and the area’s low-lying position contribute to slow water recession. The situation is often made worse by heavy traffic, as Kemang is known for its busy restaurants and entertainment spots.

The Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency has listed Kemang among its priority flood-mitigation areas. Drainage improvement works are ongoing in several flood-prone parts of the city.
