BMKG Monitors Three Tropical Cyclone Systems Near Indonesia, Warns of Heavy Rain and High Waves

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is currently monitoring three tropical cyclone systems located near Indonesian territory, which may affect national weather conditions in the coming days, particularly in southern regions.

The Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, conveyed this information to President Prabowo Subianto during a Plenary Cabinet Meeting held at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, 15 December 2025.

Faisal stated that the three systems consist of Tropical Cyclone Bakung, Cyclone Seed 93S, and Cyclone Seed 95S. According to BMKG observations, these systems have increased the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall and high sea waves in several regions.

“Currently, there are three cyclones surrounding Indonesia, Mr President. The first is Cyclone Bakung,” Faisal said, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Cyclone Bakung developed southwest of Lampung and was initially moving away from Indonesian territory.

However, Faisal noted that its intensity has increased. BMKG upgraded the cyclone’s status from Category 1 to Category 2 based on recent monitoring.

The agency will continue to observe Cyclone Bakung over the next two to three days. Faisal said BMKG hopes the cyclone will not move into Indonesian territory and will not significantly affect rainfall patterns.

“On 14 December, it was even recorded as a Category 3, with winds reaching 65 knots. This is very dangerous, but it has since been downgraded to Category 2, and now we hope it is approaching Category 1,” he said.

In addition to Cyclone Bakung, BMKG is monitoring Cyclone Seed 93S, which has been detected in areas around Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and East Java. Cyclone seed 95S has been observed in southern Papua, particularly in the Arafura Sea region.

Faisal said the presence of these systems increases the likelihood of high to very high rainfall, as well as elevated wave heights in surrounding waters.

“We have communicated, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), that the public remains calm while we monitor conditions and are always prepared for heavy rainfall and high waves,” he said.

He also noted that Indonesia has been designated by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) as a Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre. In this role, BMKG continues to coordinate with meteorological agencies in Australia, Japan, and India to monitor the development and movement of tropical cyclones affecting the region.

Jakarta Placed Under Weather Alert as BMKG Issues Public Safety Advice

BMKG has also issued an early weather warning for Jakarta on Thursday, 18 December 2025. The capital is forecast to experience moderate rainfall throughout the day.

According to BMKG, Jakarta’s weather conditions are being influenced by large-scale atmospheric dynamics linked to Cyclone 93S in the Indian Ocean, south of East Java, and Cyclone 95S in the Arafura Sea.

These systems have created areas of slowed wind movement, which support the formation of dense rain clouds over parts of Java, including Jakarta.

Based on information published by @infobmkg, weather conditions in Jakarta are expected to change throughout the day. In the morning, most areas are predicted to be covered by thick clouds, with light rain forecast for the Thousand Islands.

Rain is expected to become more widespread in the afternoon, affecting most parts of the capital. From afternoon to night, rainfall intensity may increase, accompanied by persistent cloud cover across all areas. By early morning, skies are expected to remain overcast.

In response to these conditions, BMKG has urged the public to remain calm but vigilant. The agency advised residents to limit outdoor activities during periods of heavy rain, avoid flood-prone areas, and refrain from wading through standing water.

“If flooding occurs, avoid direct contact with water, as it may contain hazardous waste and pathogens,” Faisal said.

BMKG also emphasised the importance of monitoring official weather updates and warnings through authorised channels. The agency stated that preparedness remains essential, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and high waves.

This includes preparing emergency supplies, maintaining communication with family members, and following instructions from local authorities if evacuation measures are required.

BMKG will continue to provide updates as monitoring of Cyclone Bakung and the two cyclone seeds progresses.
