An online motorcycle taxi driver in Bali has gained attention on social media after refusing to continue a ride with a foreign passenger who would not wear a helmet.
The incident was shared in a video uploaded by the social media account @alvesgodino and quickly spread online. Many viewers praised the driver for prioritising safety and following traffic rules, despite losing the fare.
In the video, the driver can be seen speaking firmly to the passenger before deciding to cancel the order. According to the caption shared online, the incident happened while they were about to travel on a main road.
The passenger was reportedly asked several times to wear the helmet provided by the driver. However, the passenger continued to refuse.
Rather than continue the journey and risk possible problems on the road, the driver chose to end the trip immediately.
“No helmet, no, I can’t take you. You can cancel if you want,” the driver said in the video.
The clip quickly attracted comments from social media users, many of whom supported the driver’s decision. Several people pointed out that helmet use is not only common sense for safety, but also required under Indonesian traffic regulations for both riders and passengers.
Others said the moment highlighted the importance of respecting local rules while travelling abroad.
Netizens Praise the Driver’s Firm Decision
Many commenters applauded the driver for staying calm while still standing by the rules.
One user wrote, “Respect for him who cares about their customers’ safety. Please always put your helmet on; it might ruin your hair, but it’s worth it. If you’re worried about helmet hygiene, please take a shower cap.”
Another commenter said the driver had set a good example for others in similar situations.
“Nice, bro! Please normalise this kind of driver behaviour, so that strangers know that in other countries, we have to respect our obligations and customs. Keep up the spirit, bro,” the comment read.
Some netizens also noted that many motorcycle taxi drivers often face difficult situations with passengers who refuse to follow safety instructions. In this case, viewers said the driver handled the situation professionally without becoming aggressive or emotional.
Helmet use remains mandatory in Indonesia under national traffic laws. Riders and passengers who fail to wear helmets can face penalties, especially on busy public roads.
In Bali, online motorcycle taxis are widely used by both locals and foreign tourists because they offer a quick and affordable way to travel through traffic-heavy areas. However, drivers are still expected to follow transport and road safety regulations during every trip.
