PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is developing a special train service for farmers and traders to improve agricultural distribution, support trade mobility, and strengthen regional economies.
“KAI continues to introduce transportation innovations that align with the real needs of the community. One of the latest breakthroughs is the development of a special Economy Class Passenger Train (K3) for farmers and traders, which is currently being modified at the UPT Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng facility,” said KAI’s Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba, in Jakarta on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.
Anne explained that the concept was initiated in May 2024 and realised through a modification process that prioritises accessibility and additional cargo capacity.
“Seats are installed side by side on the left and right sides of the train, leaving the central area open for placing agricultural products or goods, while also facilitating movement inside the train,” she said.

Several technical adjustments have been made to adapt the train for farmers and traders. The gangway doors have been widened from 800 mm to 900 mm, partitions and gangways removed to ease access for goods, and the number of seats reduced to 73 from the previous 106.
One toilet per carriage remains available, and luggage racks have been retained for passenger use.
The modified carriages, developed from business and economy class stock, are currently undergoing testing. Static testing took place on 14–15 August 2025 at the Surabaya Gubeng facility, followed by dynamic testing on 15 August along the Surabaya Gubeng–Lamongan route.
This initial testing was carried out by KAI personnel, while the next stage will involve the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation to ensure the carriages meet safety certification standards before entering public service.
Commitment to Inclusive Transport and National Growth
Anne underlined that the project demonstrates KAI’s commitment to expanding inclusive access to public transport and supporting the economy.
“We want the train to be a travel companion for farmers and traders. With the right transportation, the supply chain will be stronger, business opportunities will be more open, and regional economic activities will continue to grow,” she stated.
She added that the initiative aligns with the spirit of Asta Cita Towards Indonesia Emas 2045 and the company’s strategic mission to make railways a driver of national development, environmentally friendly, globally competitive, and a source of national pride.
The Farmer–Trader Train will also form part of the celebrations marking the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Railways on 28 September 2025.
“The design concept prioritises ease of access and a larger cargo space,” Anne reaffirmed in an official statement to Kompas.com.
Through this innovation, KAI aims to provide inclusive, customer-oriented services while reinforcing its strategic role in supporting logistics, mobility, and national economic growth.
