Thai Lion Air Launches Direct Surabaya–Bangkok Route Starting 30 May 2025

Thai Lion Air is set to officially commence a direct flight service connecting Surabaya, Indonesia, and Bangkok, Thailand, starting 30 May 2025. The route will link Juanda International Airport (SUB) with Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), providing a faster and more efficient travel option for business and leisure travellers.

Danang Mandala Prihantoro, Corporate Communications Strategic of the Lion Group, described the launch as a positive step for residents of East Java and surrounding regions, particularly benefiting business professionals and tourists.

“The Surabaya–Bangkok direct flight will enhance bilateral connectivity and support growth in tourism, trade, and education sectors between Indonesia and Thailand,” said Danang in an official press release.

The route will be serviced by modern Boeing 737-800NG or 737-900ER aircraft, known for their comfort and reliability. With no time difference between Surabaya (WIB) and Bangkok (ICT), passengers can enjoy a seamless travel experience without needing to adjust their schedules.

Passengers can conveniently book tickets and check in via the BookCabin app. CabinClub members will also enjoy exclusive promotions, priority services, and a variety of additional benefits.

Strategic Benefits for Business and Tourism

This direct connection is considered strategically significant, particularly for entrepreneurs and professionals seeking to expand their business networks and streamline mobility between the two countries. Direct flights offer a time-saving solution that increases travel efficiency and productivity.

For tourists, the new route opens direct access to Bangkok and serves as a convenient gateway to explore top Thai destinations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and more, without the need for layovers.

Similarly, travellers from Thailand and other countries can now easily reach Surabaya and visit tourist spots in East Java and eastern Indonesia.

Danang emphasised that the route represents Thai Lion Air commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Thailand, encompassing not just tourism and trade, but also education, culture, and the creative economy.

“With enhanced air connectivity, communication and collaboration between nations can progress more smoothly. This forms an essential foundation for developing a more integrated Southeast Asian region,” he added.

Earlier Launch: Bali–Bangkok Route Boosts Regional Access

This announcement follows the successful launch of the Bali–Bangkok direct route on 10 April 2025, connecting I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) with Don Mueang Airport (DMK).

The Bali route has already proven to be an attractive option for international travellers seeking seamless onward journeys to Thailand without transiting through other hubs.

Travellers can use Bangkok as a connecting hub for destinations across Thailand (e.g., Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Phuket), as well as international cities in China, India, Japan, Taiwan, and beyond, including Hong Kong, Macau, Kathmandu, and Penang.
