Extreme Weather in Bali Disrupts Flights and Sea Crossings

Severe weather in Bali has caused major disruptions to air and sea transportation. Between February 10 and 12, 2025, heavy rains and strong winds affected travel on the Island of the Gods. A total of 15 flights were impacted at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, with delays, diversions, and cancellations.

Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, the General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, explained, “There are a total of 15 flights affected by weather conditions at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport between February 10-12, 2025.” He added that the worst disruption occurred on February 10, when 11 flights were affected.

On that day, eight domestic flights were delayed, including routes from Denpasar to Tambolaka, Sumbawa, Bima, Lombok, Kupang, Surabaya, and Kuala Namu. Two international flights, one from Bengaluru and one from Hong Kong, had to cancel their landings at the airport. Additionally, Wings Air cancelled its Denpasar-Tambolaka flight.

The following day, more disruptions occurred, including one delayed flight, two diverted flights, and another cancelled landing.

Due to the continuing bad weather, Syaugi encouraged passengers to stay in close contact with airlines and to arrive early. “We urge service users to arrive early and coordinate with the airline to find out updates on flight schedules related to the extreme weather that hit Bali Island,” he said, as reported by Kompas.

The Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region III Denpasar warned the public about the impact of extreme weather, forecasting winds up to 60 kilometres per hour between February 11-13, 2025. “We urge people to remain vigilant against puddles, floods, landslides and fallen trees,” said Cahyo Nugroho, Head of BBMKG Region III Denpasar.

Sea travel also faced disruptions, particularly the crossings from Kusamba Port to Nusa Penida. Ni Luh Putu Eka Suyasmin, the Head of the Nusa Penida Class II Port Operator Unit, explained, “If visibility is limited and the wind is very strong, we will temporarily postpone the crossing, while still coordinating with the destination port.”

The weather caused delays on February 11, but by the afternoon, conditions improved, and services resumed. Normally, there are nine departures daily from Tribhuana Harbor to Nusa Penida, but the morning delay reduced the number of crossings.
