Jakarta has been named the seventh most congested city in the world, according to the Global Traffic Scorecard 2024 released by INRIX, a U.S.-based traffic data analysis company.

Jakarta’s position as the most congested city has increased. This is because Jakarta was previously only ranked the tenth most congested city in the world according to INRIX in 2023.

Throughout 2024, INRIX considers Jakarta to be more congested. According to the study, motorists in Jakarta lost more time during rush hour. The total amount of time lost due to traffic congestion during peak hours is compared to off-peak conditions.

Based on the INRIX study, in one year each driver loses 89 hours due to traffic congestion. This is up from 65 hours in 2023. That’s a 37 percent increase.

INRIX ranked 946 cities across 37 countries to compile its Global Traffic Scorecard. The study revealed that the average driving speed in central Jakarta is just 13 miles per hour (20 km/h), underscoring the severe traffic challenges in the city.

The Global Traffic Scorecard 2024 includes comparisons of travel delays, last-mile speeds, and travel trends based on unique travel patterns in each metropolitan area. Travel time is calculated by looking exclusively at the time it takes to get to and from major employment centres in the urban area from the surrounding neighbourhoods.
