Soekarno-Hatta and Two Airports Reopen as Anak Krakatau Eruption Subsides

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soetta) in Banten has officially reopened following several days of disruption caused by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The airport resumed operations at 00:30 WIB on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Two other airports affected by the volcanic ash, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, West Java, have also reopened.

Halim Perdanakusuma Airport resumed operations at 00:40 WIB, followed by Husein Sastranegara Airport at 00:42 WIB.

The reopening follows reports that volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau had subsided. Kompas.com reported on Monday, September 7, that the eruption had eased, allowing authorities and airport operators to begin restoring normal operations.

InJourney Airports confirmed the reopening through an announcement on its official Instagram account on Tuesday.

“In addressing this situation, InJourney Airports remains committed to prioritising passenger security, safety, and comfort.”

Despite the resumption of airport operations, passengers have been advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.

Passengers Advised to Check Flight Status

The reopening of the three airports does not necessarily mean that all scheduled flights have returned to normal. Passengers are therefore encouraged to contact their respective airlines’ call centres to obtain the latest information about their flights.

Travellers can also contact the InJourney Airports contact centre for updates regarding airport operations and the latest situation.

Passengers are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and check for any changes before leaving for the airport.

Nearly 3,000 Flights Affected by Volcanic Ash

The impact of the Anak Krakatau eruption has extended beyond the three airports that have now reopened.

As of Monday afternoon, September 7, a total of 2,961 domestic and international flights had been affected by operational changes linked to the spread of volcanic ash. The disruption involved 2,339 domestic flights and 622 international flights.

The figures were announced by Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi, who said the disruption had also affected hundreds of thousands of passengers.

“As of Monday afternoon, 2,961 flights, comprising 2,339 domestic and 622 international flights—have been affected by operational changes due to the spread of volcanic ash,” said Dudy, as reported by Antara.

Approximately 341,000 passengers were affected by the disruption as of Monday afternoon. The situation followed the closure of seven regional airports as authorities responded to the presence of volcanic ash in the surrounding areas.
