Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts 21 Times in 3 Days, Alerts to Increase Safety Concerns

Share:

The past few days have witnessed an unprecedented surge in volcanic activity in Gunung Anak Krakatau. Starting from the morning of November 26th until November 28th, the volcano has erupted a staggering 21 times. Such rapid eruptions signify intense volcanic activity within a relatively short span.

Mount Anak Krakatau has exhibited an unprecedented surge in volcanic activity, recording a total of 21 eruptions from the morning of November 26 to November 28, 2023. This spike indicates heightened volcanic activity within a relatively short time frame.

As of today, Wednesday, November 29, 2023, the mountain remains visible despite the presence of Mist 0-III, according to official reports from magma.esdm.go.id. The main crater’s smoke appears grey in color with moderate to thick intensities reaching approximately 100-300 meters from the summit. Additionally, there have been a total of 3 Explosion/Eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-30 mm and intervals of about 17-28 seconds. PVMBG (Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation) also confirmed a single Tremor Meneru earthquake.

Although the volcano is shrouded in mist, preventing direct observation of the crater’s smoke, the surrounding weather is cloudy with weak winds blowing northwestward. The air temperature hovers around 27 degrees Celsius, with humidity ranging between 39% to 53%.

Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at level III alert or “Siaga,” prompting authorities to advise residents, visitors, tourists, and climbers to refrain from approaching or engaging in activities within a five-kilometre radius of the active crater.

The escalation in Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity is attributed to heavy rainfall around the volcano’s crater, triggering these eruptions.

Monitoring data from the Observation Post in Hargo Pancoran Village notes that the volcano has experienced 90 eruptions within the period from Sunday to Tuesday. These eruptions expelled volcanic ash reaching heights of 500 to 2,000 meters above the mountain’s summit.

In efforts to ensure safety, the South Lampung Water Police Unit (Sat Pol Air) deployed patrol vessel XXV 1016 to warn fishermen and tourists to refrain from activities within a 5-kilometer radius of Mount Anak Krakatau.

Mount Anak Krakatau Throughout 2023

Mount Anak Krakatau stands as an active volcano located in South Lampung Regency, Lampung, Indonesia, with geographical coordinates at Latitude -6.102°N and Longitude 105.423°E, at an elevation of 157 meters above sea level. Notably, its height has increased to 180 meters above sea level following the eruption in 2018.

Since June 2023, Mount Krakatau has erupted six times, with varying ash plume heights. In July 2023, the mountain erupted, releasing volcanic ash up to 2,000 meters high, recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 61 millimetres and lasting approximately 3 minutes and 2 seconds. There were several other eruptions throughout September 2023, reaching a maximum height of 1,000 meters.
