The Jakarta Transport Office has developed a few plans to tackle the city’s deteriorating traffic jams caused by the rapid and more effective influx of private vehicles throughout the capital. On the 17th of June 2023, Syafrin Liputo, Director of the Jakarta Transportation Office, said that his department is managing traffic at several locations to lessen the traffic.

“We are doing route closures in several locations, applying one-way at several points, and doing geometric planning for intersections and traffic signs,” Liputo explained.

To reduce traffic jams, the government has also deployed artificial intelligence (AI) equipment at several intersections in Jakarta.

“Recently, we implemented an intelligent transportation system for regulating traffic at intersections to reduce congestion,” Liputo stated.

According to Liputo, the AI technology used in collaboration with Google Inc. manages the timing of traffic signals and supervision based on data from Google’s internal database. The system will be able to measure and compute the volume and the traffic timing at the road crossings, which usually are very congested.

In addition, Liputo announced that the provincial government would hold a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) on the separation of working hours for employees in Jakarta.

“The agreements and conceptualisations from the FGD will be realised and implemented as soon as possible,” Liputo continued.

Earlier, Syaripudin, the Deputy Head of the Jakarta Transportation Office, stated that he anticipated the discussion on the city’s working hour regulations to ease the traffic jams in Jakarta to be finished by this month.

“We hope to finish it this June,” he declared on the 14th of June 2023, during a meeting with the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD).

Syaripudin noted that the proposed legislation on working hours to ease the traffic jams is still being reviewed with several stakeholders, including the association of employers and management of retail centres.
