Jakarta Commuter Line Chaos: ‘Spring Bed’ Incident Halts Train at Pondok Ranji Station for Hours

Share:

The Jakarta Commuter Line (KRL) travelling on the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitunhg route encountered difficulties at Pondok Ranji Station, South Tangerang, on 30th January 2024, around 6:17 PM. This was caused by the train wheels becoming entangled in the spring bed wire. This unexpected occurrence resulted in the commuter line train being stuck for several hours, causing it to become fully crowded.

As a consequence of Incident II, a total of 14 Jakarta commuter line trips were disrupted. In an official statement from Leza Arlan, responsible for External Relations & Corporate Image Care at KAI Commuter, firm actions will be taken against individuals involved in throwing spring beds onto the train tracks.

“KAI Commuter deeply regrets this incident. Law No. 23 of 2007 regarding Railways, explicitly prohibits individuals from being in the utility room of a railway line, dragging, moving, placing, or positioning goods on the rails, or using the train route for purposes other than transportation,” explained Leza in his statement on the evening of Tuesday (30/1/2024).

The sequence of events, gathered from various sources, indicates that the train officers on duty at Pondok Ranji Station were conducting inspections in the train track area. During this, they observed a foreign object entering the area beneath the train. Subsequent investigation revealed that it was a spring bed, and its wires had become entangled in the train wheels, causing it to be immobilized for several hours.

This incident gained widespread attention on social media as users of the Jakarta commuter line, caught up in the situation, expressed their dissatisfaction. Numerous passengers were notably frustrated as, in that circumstance, they were fatigued from returning home from work and faced significant delays in reaching their destinations due to the incident.

On 1st February 2024, the wire from the mattress was successfully removed, and subsequently, the train schedule gradually returned to its normal operation. Presently, the police are actively searching for the individual responsible for discarding the spring bed, leading to this disruption. The suspect, upon apprehension, will be subject to a fine of IDR 15 million.
