Art Jakarta 2026 Brings 75 Galleries and Contemporary Art to Jakarta

Looking for something different to do in Jakarta this weekend? Art Jakarta 2026 is bringing together 75 galleries from across Asia for three days of contemporary art, creative projects and cultural experiences at JIExpo Kemayoran.

The annual art fair returns to Jakarta with its public days running on 3 and 4 October 2026, from 11am to 8pm. Galleries from Jakarta and other Indonesian cities will be joined by participants from major Asian art centres including Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Rather than being an event only for collectors and seasoned art enthusiasts, this year’s programme brings together galleries, artists, collectives, independent projects and creative communities. The result is a broader look at how contemporary art is being created, presented and experienced across the region.

More Than Just Looking at Art

One of the interesting things about Art Jakarta 2026 is the range of experiences visitors can explore. Alongside paintings and sculptures, the fair features installations, technology-driven works, artist collectives and projects that connect art with everyday urban culture.

The fair’s Scene programme, for example, is designed to bring together artist collectives, art merchandise, craft studios and independent projects. This year, Scene features 39 presentations, giving creative communities an opportunity to connect directly with the public.

Technology also plays a role in several of the works presented this year. Some installations are designed to respond to visitors, making the audience part of the experience rather than simply a spectator.

One example highlighted in the programme is Agnes Hansella’s Hutan Kabel (Wood Wide Web), which uses thousands of metres of discarded cables and telecommunications waste. Sensors allow the installation’s optical fibres to respond to visitors’ movements, creating an artwork that changes as people interact with it.

There is also The Curiosity Engine by Aji Fajar/Palette Studio, another interactive work that invites visitors to explore its visual elements and mechanisms.

Beyond the galleries, Art Jakarta also explores the relationship between contemporary art and urban lifestyle. A collaboration between DJOURNAL and street artist Darbotz, for instance, brings together street culture, coffee and visual art in a project designed as a more immersive experience.

Discover Art From Across Indonesia and Asia

Art Jakarta 2026 is also giving more space to art initiatives outside the capital through AJScope, a new section featuring MTN Market.

The programme brings together independent art-market initiatives from several Indonesian cities, including Mini Art Malang, Artists Art Fair from Pekanbaru, ART HEY from Banyumas, Maa Ledungga from Gorontalo, Hello Goodbye Photo Market from Bekasi and Watercolor Art Fair from Yogyakarta.

Their participation offers visitors a chance to discover different approaches to developing local art communities and markets across Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the main gallery programme offers a wider regional perspective, with 75 galleries presenting contemporary works from across Asia. The participating galleries include established names as well as newer participants, creating a mix of artistic practices and perspectives.

For anyone who thinks an art fair means quietly walking around a room of paintings, Art Jakarta 2026 offers plenty of reasons to think again. From interactive installations and street culture to independent creative communities and galleries from across Asia, the event brings different sides of contemporary culture together under one roof.

So, if your weekend plans are still looking a little empty, this could be your sign to swap the usual mall trip for an afternoon surrounded by art. Bring your friends, take your time, and see what catches your eye.

Art Jakarta 2026 is open to the public on 3–4 October at JIExpo Kemayoran, from 11am to 8pm.
