Perimenopause is a natural stage of life, yet it remains a topic many women find difficult to discuss. From unpredictable periods and changing energy levels to shifts in mood and sexual health, the transition can affect women in different ways. Having the right information and a supportive community can make the experience easier to navigate.
To encourage more open conversations, Osteria GIA has introduced Women of Osteria GIA, an initiative that brings women together to share experiences, learn from experts and explore different aspects of well-being. Its discussion series, Women of Osteria GIA in Conversations, was developed in collaboration with Sahabat KIAN, with the theme “Listen to Your Body: Breast Cancer Awareness for Women in Perimenopause”.
Held at Osteria GIA in Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta, the gathering offered a relaxed setting for an honest conversation about a life stage that is often surrounded by misconceptions and stigma.
Understanding Perimenopause Beyond the Physical Changes
Perimenopause involves hormonal fluctuations that can affect more than menstrual cycles. Women may experience changes in their physical health, emotions, metabolism and sexual well-being. Understanding these changes can help them make informed decisions about their health and daily routines.
The discussion featured four speakers who brought different perspectives to the conversation, combining medical knowledge with personal insights and practical approaches to well-being.
Dr Dinda Derdameisya, Sp.OG (@tanyadokdin), shared insights into the biological changes associated with perimenopause.
Artist, theatre producer and cultural activist Happy Salma, Lena Budiman and Dian Purba, shared insights into healthy living and the value of becoming aware of potential perimenopausal changes early.
Together, the speakers offered a broader perspective on perimenopause and breast cancer, showing that navigating this transition involves more than understanding hormones. It also means paying attention to emotional needs, personal priorities and the support available to each woman.
Finding Confidence Through Community and Self-Care
Beyond the discussion itself, Women of Osteria GIA aims to create a space where women can exchange experiences without feeling embarrassed or judged. The initiative encourages open conversations about topics that are often left unspoken, while offering opportunities to learn practical approaches to everyday well-being.
A supportive community can help women feel less isolated when dealing with unfamiliar changes. It can also encourage them to ask questions, seek professional advice and explore lifestyle adjustments that suit their individual needs.
Perimenopause does not have to be viewed as a loss of identity or the end of a particular chapter. With reliable information, appropriate healthcare and a strong support network, women can approach this transition with greater confidence and a better understanding of their bodies.
