Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced plans to build two pedestrian bridges featuring a “love padlock” concept in the HR Rasuna Said area of South Jakarta as part of the continued redevelopment of the former monorail project site.
The proposal was revealed while Pramono attended the inauguration of the new North Jakarta District Attorney’s Office (Kejari) building alongside Attorney General ST Burhanuddin in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (30 June 2026).
According to Pramono, the bridges will span the river in the Rasuna Said corridor, an area that has recently undergone significant redevelopment after years of being marked by abandoned monorail pillars.
“Therefore, I have instructed the Bina Marga staff to install two bridges crossing the river. Later, people will be allowed to install ‘love padlocks’ on them. Because love is very important in Jakarta,” Pramono said.
The governor said the bridge project forms part of broader efforts to revitalise the Rasuna Said area following the completion of long-delayed infrastructure works.
Redevelopment Marks End of Long-Running Monorail Project
Pramono said the transformation of the former monorail corridor was made possible through cooperation between the Jakarta Provincial Government and the Attorney General’s Office, which helped resolve legal issues that had delayed the project for years.
He noted that the monorail development had remained unfinished for more than two decades before construction work was finally completed under the current administration.
“In the past, Jakarta had many unresolved issues. One of them was the monorail in Rasuna Said, which had 109 piles and a length of 3.8 kilometres. Thank God, now we have successfully completed Jalan Rasuna Said, making it a Jakarta landmark appreciated by the public,” he said.
Pramono also expressed his appreciation to the Attorney General’s Office and the Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office for supporting the provincial government in resolving legal and administrative obstacles affecting several strategic projects across the capital.
“Therefore, Mr Attorney General, I would like to express my special gratitude for the excellent coordination and cooperation with your staff. Issues that were previously untouched and unresolved have finally been resolved successfully. Especially the Rasuna Said issue,” he added.
Proposal Receives Criticism from Jakarta Legislator
The proposed “love padlock” bridge has since drawn criticism from a member of Jakarta’s Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD), who questioned the city’s development priorities.
Commission A member Kevin Wu argued that development should be distributed more evenly across Jakarta rather than focusing on landmark projects in selected areas.
Speaking to Kompas.com, Kevin said residents in West Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta and other parts of the capital should receive equal attention from the provincial government.
He said the administration should ensure that infrastructure development addresses the needs of communities across all regions and does not create the impression that symbolic or iconic projects are taking precedence over essential public services.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has not yet announced a construction timeline or budget for the proposed bridges. Further details regarding the design and implementation of the project are expected to be released as planning progresses.
