Bali is known for its warm tropical climate, but many residents have recently noticed a change in the island’s weather. Over the past few days, temperatures in several areas have felt significantly colder, particularly during the night and early morning.
The phenomenon has been reported across various parts of the island, including Denpasar, Gianyar, and Buleleng. While daytime conditions remain sunny and relatively warm, cooler temperatures after sunset have prompted questions from residents and visitors alike.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the cooler conditions are a normal part of Bali weather during the peak of the dry season.
Why Does Bali Weather Feel Colder?

Residents across Bali have reported that temperatures have felt lower than usual, especially in the early morning.
Kadek Suka Artayana, a resident of Padangbulia Village in Sukasada District, Buleleng Regency, said the change had become noticeable in recent days.
“In the morning it feels colder than usual. When I leave the house, the cold feels more piercing. It has been like this for around five days,” said Kadek.
According to I Wayan Gita Giriharta, Weather Forecaster at the Centre for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Region III Denpasar, cooler temperatures during the night and early morning are common during the peak dry season.
“The phenomenon of air temperatures feeling colder at night usually occurs during the peak dry season period, namely June, July, and August,” said Gita.
The agency explained that the phenomenon is linked to seasonal atmospheric patterns that affect Bali and much of southern Indonesia during the middle of the year.
The Role of the Australian Monsoon in Bali Weather
Seasonal Position of the Sun
One of the main factors influencing Bali weather at this time of year is the annual apparent movement of the sun.
During June, July, and August, the sun is positioned over the Northern Hemisphere. As a result, areas south of the equator, including Bali, receive less direct solar radiation compared with other times of the year.
Gita explained that this situation creates a deficit in solar heating across southern Indonesia.
Cold Air Masses from Australia
Another important factor is the Australian winter season.
Australia is currently experiencing winter, resulting in relatively high atmospheric pressure over the continent. This condition pushes cooler air masses northward towards Indonesia.
“The Australian continent is in its winter period, causing the movement of cold air masses from Australia towards Indonesia through Bali and surrounding areas,” Gita explained.
A similar explanation was provided by BBMKG Region III Denpasar forecaster Luh Eka Arisanti.
“This is caused by the annual apparent movement of the sun and the active Australian Monsoon. During this period, the sun is positioned in the Northern Hemisphere.”
She added that Australia is currently experiencing winter conditions with relatively high air pressure.
“As a result, cold air masses move from Australia towards Indonesia through Bali and surrounding regions,” Eka said.
How Clear Skies Affect Night-Time Temperatures

Less Cloud Cover Means Faster Heat Loss
Clear skies are another reason Bali weather feels colder during the dry season.
Clouds normally act like a blanket, trapping some of the heat stored near the Earth’s surface. However, during the dry season, cloud cover is often limited.
As a result, heat accumulated during the day escapes more easily into the atmosphere after sunset.
According to Gita:
“Skies that tend to be clear with little cloud cover cause solar radiation heat to be released directly into the atmosphere, making the air near the surface feel colder, especially from night until morning.”
This explains why temperatures can feel surprisingly cool despite bright and sunny conditions during the day.
How Cold Has Bali Become?
Data from the Automatic Weather Station operated by BBMKG Region III Denpasar recorded some notably low temperatures during the past few days.
The lowest temperature was observed at AWS Kintamani 2 in Bangli Regency, which recorded 13.51 degrees Celsius at 5.00 am local time.
Meanwhile, coastal areas across Bali generally recorded minimum temperatures ranging from 19 to 24 degrees Celsius.
Although these temperatures remain moderate by international standards, they can feel considerably cooler for residents accustomed to Bali’s tropical climate.
Current Bali Weather Conditions
BMKG forecast predominantly partly cloudy conditions across Bali on 1 June 2026.
Wind speeds were expected to range from 4 to 30 kilometres per hour, while daytime temperatures could reach up to 32 degrees Celsius.
Wave heights were forecast at 0.5 to 1.25 metres in northern Bali waters and 0.5 to 2.5 metres in southern waters.
BMKG also advised residents in Buleleng Regency to remain alert for the possibility of strong winds throughout the day.
Will the Cooler Bali Weather Continue?
According to BMKG, cooler temperatures during the night and early morning are likely to continue throughout the dry season.
The phenomenon is expected to remain common during June, July, and August, particularly when skies remain clear and the Australian Monsoon continues to influence weather patterns across southern Indonesia.
Residents and visitors planning outdoor activities during the early morning are advised to wear suitable clothing and take steps to maintain their health and comfort during cooler conditions.
People Also Ask (PAA)
Why is Bali weather colder than usual?
Bali weather feels colder because the island is entering the peak dry season. Reduced solar heating, clear skies, and cold air masses from Australia contribute to lower temperatures, especially at night and in the early morning.
What causes cold temperatures in Bali during the dry season?
The main causes are the Australian Monsoon, Australia’s winter season, reduced solar radiation in southern Indonesia, and limited cloud cover that allows heat to escape more quickly after sunset.
Which areas in Bali experience the coldest temperatures?
Highland regions such as Kintamani in Bangli Regency typically record the lowest temperatures. BMKG recently recorded a minimum temperature of 13.51°C in Kintamani.
Is it normal for Bali weather to be cold in June?
Yes. BMKG states that cooler temperatures are common during June, July, and August, which represent the peak of the dry season in Bali.
What should visitors pack for Bali during the dry season?
Visitors should bring light clothing for daytime activities and a light jacket or jumper for evenings, early mornings, and visits to highland areas such as Kintamani, Bedugul, and Mount Batur.
