Starting Saturday, 11 October 2025, Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta will welcome visitors after dark. The programme, called Night at the Ragunan Zoo, will run every Saturday from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm.
Governor Pramono Anung explained the move was designed to give Jakartans and tourists more choices for leisure and exercise.
“I asked for a trial run, to give the public the opportunity to enjoy the nighttime. But it will also be open for people to exercise in Ragunan,” he said on Thursday (9 October), as reported by Tirto.
Visitors should note that cars are not allowed inside during the evening hours. Instead, shuttle buses will transport people around the grounds.
“If you really want to enjoy the animals, you’re welcome to, but you’re not allowed to bring a car. We’ll use a shuttle service,” Pramono emphasised.
He added that this was aimed at keeping visitor flow orderly and ensuring the animals were not disturbed.
The governor also pointed out that with this new schedule, families and groups would not need to travel far to enjoy an evening outing in Jakarta.

Ragunan Zoo Opens for Night Visitors
The plan has been carefully prepared by the Jakarta City Parks and Forestry Agency (Distamhut). Head of the agency, Fajar Sauri, confirmed it.
“We have conducted simulations and a thorough study regarding the technical implementation of nighttime operations at Ragunan Zoo,” he said in a press release.
He stressed that animal welfare comes first.
“We have determined which animals will be displayed to visitors at night. We prioritise the animals’ comfort before displaying them,” he said.
Among the chosen areas are the small mammal section, the tiger enclosure, the terrarium, and the hippopotamus area.
These feature species that are naturally active at night. Zookeepers will also hold scheduled feeding sessions and short educational activities, giving visitors the chance to learn more about nocturnal behaviour.
To support the programme, the zoo has installed special lighting that allows visibility without disrupting natural rhythms. Street lights, animal-area lamps, and a picnic zone have been added. Security officers and field guides will also be stationed throughout the zoo.
For those wanting convenience, electric car rentals are available at Rp 250,000 per hour, seating up to five people.
