Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Concert

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Concert: Official Disney Live Scoring Concert in Indonesia

Ciputra Artpreneur has brought something new to Jakarta’s stage. For the first time, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Concert arrives in Indonesia with a live scoring format. The event took place on 27 and 28 September 2025 at Ciputra Artpreneur Theatre.

The idea is simple but unusual. The original 1991 animated film plays on a big screen, dialogue and vocals intact. Instead of recorded music, a 60-piece orchestra performs Alan Menken’s score in real time, following every cue from the opening titles to the final credits.

David Feng, producer from Willow Arts SG, explained the appeal. “Concert Live-to-Picture (Live Scoring) gives a truly immersive experience, where the audience feels the film and music blend beautifully, performed live by the orchestra. This format has charmed audiences around the world, and we hope its presence in Indonesia brings the same spirit and moves hearts through the power of music and story,” he said.

Michael Llyod Daniels II, as the Chief Technical Director, also shared the same sentiment.

“I’m here because Willow wanted to present a Disney live concert film production in Jakarta. It’s the first time there has ever been one with a full orchestra, so I think it’s special to bring these kinds of productions to different parts of the world whenever possible,” he said.

He added that having a full symphony orchestra in Jakarta is significant. “This is one of the great opportunities to showcase a full-size orchestra performing high-standard, classic Disney music.”

When asked why Beauty and the Beast was chosen over other titles, David explained, “It’s more popular and well-known. Beauty and the Beast is one of Disney’s most iconic films.”

Local Orchestra Takes the Lead

The concert also marks the first time a local orchestra and conductor have been chosen to perform Alan Menken’s celebrated score in Indonesia. The Bandung Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Wishnu Dewanta, is trusted with the task.

Playing live to film is no easy job. Every note must stay in sync with the animation. Wishnu explained his role clearly. “As a conductor, my role is not only to maintain the flow and rhythm of the music, but also to ensure each musical moment matches the film on screen”, he said.

Wishnu shared that one of the biggest challenges in leading the orchestra is how to maintain the sound and the scene from the movie comes perfectly synchronised.
With international musicians in the orchestra, he carries the responsibility of unifying artistic interpretation.

Clear communication of tempo, nuance, and phrasing is essential, and with rehearsal time often limited to only one or two days, strict discipline becomes crucial.

For Disney Concerts, this is the first time an Indonesian venue has been given the licence. Ciputra Artpreneur serves as both venue and promoter.

Director Nararya Ciputra Sastrawinata said, “It was not easy to obtain the official licence because Disney Concerts had never staged this concert in Indonesia before. But our experience presenting musicals and international orchestral concerts, from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (2015) to One Piece Music Symphony (2024), as well as our venue quality, convinced Disney we could host it.”

Audiences have four chances to experience the event, with two shows per day across the weekend. Those who miss it can look ahead: Disney’s The Lion King Live in Concert is scheduled at Ciputra Artpreneur for 13–14 June 2026.

With a classic story, beloved songs, and a full orchestra in sync with the screen, Beauty and the Beast in Concert blends nostalgia and live performance. It also highlights the mix of global licences and local artistry that continues to shape Jakarta’s growing performing arts scene.
