Of course, you’ve heard of the beauty of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, a destination that has attracted not only local but also international tourists for decades. However, alarming news has recently emerged: Lake Toba’s Geopark status is under threat of revocation by UNESCO.
UNESCO’s Yellow Card‘: Geopark Status at Risk
Lake Toba’s status as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) is currently hanging in the balance due to governance issues. This was revealed by the Chairman of the Indonesian Geopark Study Centre, Wilmar E. Simandjorang, as reported by Kompas.
Wilmar stated that UNESCO had issued a ‘yellow card‘ back in September 2023, giving the Indonesian government and the area’s managers two years to implement improvements in the governance of the Lake Toba Geopark.
“There is only one month left to make improvements before the arrival of the UNESCO assessor team in June.
However, until now, there has been no significant improvement. The organisation of the management body has also not been running for the past two years,” Wilmar said on Monday, 12 May 2025, as quoted by Kompas.id.
This warning comes after years of effort to gain international recognition for Lake Toba, a designation that boosted tourism and placed the region on the global map.
A Long Journey to UNESCO Recognition
Despite its natural allure, Lake Toba’s journey to being recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark was not immediate. According to the official website of the Lake Toba Authority (BPODT), the effort began in 2011.
It was not until 2019, during the 6th Asia Pacific Geopark Network Symposium, that Lake Toba’s inclusion as a UGG was approved. The official designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark followed in 2020, with 16 geosites proposed for development and preservation, highlighting the geological, ecological, and cultural diversity of the Toba Caldera.
The Toba Caldera was assigned number 155 in UNESCO’s list of Global Geoparks. As part of the status, UNESCO regularly assesses whether the region continues to uphold the values of sustainable development, environmental education, and community involvement.
Following the 2023 evaluation, the region received a “yellow card,” signifying warning status and a set of recommendations to improve the condition of the Toba Caldera UGG.
