Faster Entry for Foreign Tourists: 90 Autogates Installed at Ngurah Rai Airport

The Directorate General of Immigration inaugurated the operation of 90 Autogates that integrate Face Recognition and Border Control Management (BCM) technology at the Bali Airport International Arrival and Departure terminals to support an effective and efficient immigration inspection process.

Of the 90 units, 60 automated machines are in the international arrivals area, and 30 are in international departures.

“Today, it is complete to support immigration infrastructure at the gateway to the Island of the Gods,” said Director General of Immigration Silmy Karim during the launch of 90 units of Ngurah Rai Immigration inspection auto gate in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali, on Tuesday, October 1, as reported by Antara.

The installation of the auto gate at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport began on October 27, 2023, and its trial use began on February 1, 2024.

Autogate can be used by both Indonesian citizens and foreigners holding electronic visas. Immigration checks using autogate combine face recognition technology and Border Control Management (BCM).

The implementation of autogate supports an integrated and seamless immigration service ecosystem for foreigners, from the online visa application process to a more convenient immigration examination flow.

Small children can use facial recognition technology at Autogate

Through its latest policy, the Directorate General of Immigration now allows children aged six years and above to use the automated service at the airport. Currently, the service can also be accessed by child travellers as young as six years old, after previously having a minimum age of 14 years old.

This step makes travel easier and allows Indonesia to compete with neighbouring countries that have already implemented similar technology, such as Singapore.

“The facial recognition technology we use allows children as young as six years old to pass immigration checks automatically,” said Director General of Immigration Silmy Karim.

With passenger volumes continuing to increase, Indonesia aims to become a leader in immigration service innovation in Southeast Asia.

Data from the first semester of 2024 show that more than 20 million people travelled to and from Indonesia.

To deal with this number, autogate technology is believed to be a practical solution. Not only does it reduce queuing time, but it also puts Indonesia in a strategic position on the global innovation map.

International arrivals at Ngurah Rai Airport reach tens of thousands a day

Ngurah Rai Airport

As one of Indonesia’s main tourism gateways, international arrivals at Ngurah Rai Airport welcomes average 18,000-21,000 people per day.

With the autogate facility, the immigration inspection process only takes 15-25 seconds per person. This is certainly a good breakthrough to facilitate immigration inspection traffic to be more effective and efficient.

Silmy explained that when the automated gate at the arrival terminal began operating in February, 17% of foreigners and 49% of Indonesian citizens used it. This percentage continues to increase every month.

Until now (September 2024), foreign autogate users have reached 67% of the total foreign passengers, and Indonesian citizens have reached 62% of the total Indonesian passengers.
