Ministry of Communication and Information Investigate Alleged Nine Million Visa Data Leaks of Foreign Citizens

The Ministry of Communication and Information is investigating information related to the alleged visa data leak on nine million foreign nationals listed on their visas when they entered Indonesia.

“We will conduct data checking regarding the visa data of these foreign nationals,” said Usman Kansong, Director General of Information and Public Communication of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, as reported by a local news forum on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

A hacker named Bjorka is suspected of trading the foreigner’s data. In Bjorka’s blog, he stated that the data being traded was in the form of visas from foreigners entering Indonesia; the data was obtained from the Directorate General of Immigration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

“This database contains foreign visas to enter Indonesia issued by the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia,” Bjorka wrote on his blog.

Usman said his staff checked whether the information was true or just an empty bluff. However, Usman revealed that the visa data from the foreigners were in the same system as the Immigration Management Information System.

“Indeed, the visa data for those foreigners are indeed in the same system,” said Usman.

Recently, it was reported that 34 million Indonesian passport data were also allegedly leaked and traded. Cybersecurity practitioner Teguh Aprianto revealed this information via a tweet on his Twitter account.

“For those who already have passports, congratulations because 34 million passport data have just been leaked and traded,” said Teguh in his tweet on the @secgron account.

Teguh explained that the leaked information included passport number, expiry date, full name, date of birth, and gender. All of the important information in the passport has been leaked.

Regarding the alleged leak of passport data, Usman responded that the Ministry of Communication and Information is still waiting for a report from the National Cyber and Crypto Agency team, which has the authority to audit information security.
