A 72-year-old Australian man who had overstayed his tourist visa was deported on Thursday, 18th of May, 2023. The Australian stated that even though his visa only allowed him to stay for 30 days, he believed he had the right to stay for three months after landing in Bali on the 6th of February, 2023.
According to reports, the elderly Australian man, whose initials are MB, was required under his stay visa to depart Indonesia by the 7th of March 2023.
Last week, MB had his flight home arranged from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. However, the Australian man encountered a problem when immigration officials discovered he had overstayed his visa.
Although MB admitted to visiting Bali often, he usually stays for a maximum of a month. He has informed the authorities. However, the elderly Australian man believed a tourist visa would allow him to stay for three months.
MB obtained the Visa on Arrival at Ngurah Rai Airport when he initially arrived in Bali on the 6th of February, 2023.
According to Ngurah Rai Immigration Agency Head Sugito, “During questioning, MB admitted that he did not realise that he had overstayed [his visa].”
“Perhaps he was too busy taking his vacation in,” Sugito added
Immigration imposed Article 78 paragraph (3) of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration to MB with deportation and deterrence.
MB was deported on the 18th of May, and the elderly Australian paid for his own flight home, according to the immigration officers. However, they did not disclose the exact date of MB’s detention. The authorities acknowledged that MB had overstayed his visa by more than 60 days.
A case like MB has happened before in Bali. Last year, there was a similar case that happened, which also involved an elderly Australian man. However, different from MB, that man has overstayed for over eight years in Bali, and the authorities suspected that he had Alzheimer’s disease and had no idea that he had been overstaying for that long.
