Bali Introduces Guidebook For Unruly Tourists

Gorgeous and affordable, Bali sits at the top of the list as a holiday destination for tonnes of tourists worldwide. However, the unruly behaviour of international tourists is getting out of  hand for the Island of Gods to handle. The government is trying its best to discipline these tourists, but an endless effort needs to be made. One of the efforts that the Bali government came up with is a tourist guidebook designed explicitly for foreigners to follow.

Bali is now developing a guidebook on how to behave and present yourself when visiting a popular destination. It has long been discussed whether to create guidebooks or instructional materials for travellers to Bali. However, no concrete strategy has been presented on the subject until this week.

Anggiat Napitupulu, the director of Bali’s regional office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, announced to reporters on Sunday, the 16th of April, 2023, that the beneficial tourist guidebook is now in development.

“It must be understood that not all foreigners know what is allowed and not allowed in Bali. We intend to speed up the completion of the guidebook or instruction book dos and don’ts,” he said

Napitupulu’s endorsement of a reliable travel guidebook comes just a few weeks after Perry Markus, the secretary of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association for Bali, urged all hospitality staff to take preventative action by foreseeing unruly conduct from tourists.

Markus recently told reporters he wished to see hospitality and tourism professionals teach tourists about appropriate behaviour as often as possible to avoid unruly behaviour.

Following the most recent expulsion of an unruly foreigner from Bali, Governor Wayan Koster also issued a statement.

He declared, “As long as visitors respect Bali’s traditions and laws, Bali does not turn away visitors.”

The Governor stated, “I hope that perceptions, understanding, and commitment to the sustainability of tourism in Bali will exist at all levels of society as well as in institutions in Bali.”

An introduction to Balinese culture and customs for visitors to Bali is reportedly included in the guidebook for ideal tourists, a project financed by the local government.

It will discuss proper attire for visiting temples and how to act around, on, and in front of holy sites like mountains and Banyan trees. The guidebook will introduce travellers to traffic laws and regulations to clarify everything.

Many high-profile examples of misbehaving tourists in Bali have featured poor and, at times, hazardous driving. So much so that Governor Koster even stated he was considering banning all foreigners from driving in Bali, despite there being no laws in place.
