Numerous Bali-based female surfers were seen wearing kebaya On Sunday, the 16th of April, 2023, early in the morning. including expats and locals, participating in a surfing event at Kuta Beach. This event was created as a memorial to Raden Ajeng Kartini, an Indonesian woman who fought for gender equality throughout Indonesian history, before commemorating Kartini’s Day on Friday, the 21st of April, 2023.

This was not the first time for a group of Bali-based female surfers did this event to commemorate Kartini’s Day. The first event was held in 2017, with the message of spreading freedom and emancipation, which aligns with Kartini’s message for women. Back then, the sole reason for this event is to showcase how surfing is a sport for everyone without looking at their gender.

In 2017, even though surfing gained massive popularity throughout the Island, there are less than ten professional female surfers around, which encourages this kind of event to be held and celebrated every year after that, including this year.

This year’s event is more special than the previous years. The reason why this year’s event is so special is not because there are more participants or fancier kabaya to honour Kartini. It is because this year would be the first time, after almost four years, people would be able to surf and enjoy Bali’s gorgeous beaches without any worries.

The Island of Gods took a massive hit during the pandemic, and it almost feels like a dead island inside. This year, Bali is expected to be fully recovered and ready to welcome everyone back and enjoy their time riding the wave and surfing their souls away at Bali’s gorgeous beaches.

A surfing event like this would promote Bali as a surfing destination and celebrate Kartini Day by showcasing Indonesia’s very own kebaya, which holds a long history and pride of Indonesian women. From women to women, Happy Kartini’s Day.
