Indonesia to Work with Japan Developing 100 Gbps Network

1st September 2022 – Indonesia has signed an MoU to collaborate on the creation of a 100 Gbps network with Japan. Indonesia is represented by Indonesia Research and Education Network (IdREN) and Universitas Brawijaya (UB). Meanwhile, Japan’s representative is the Arterial Research and Educational Network in the Asia Pacific. The agreement pertains to developing and operating a 100 Gbps network between Japan and Indonesia for research and educational purposes.

The IdREN is connected to the 100 Gbps ARENA-PAC networks via UB as the gateway to Guam, Tokyo, and several other sites. With 100 times faster speed, the network represents a significant advancement for Indonesia. The gateway for this network is located at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). More than 82 universities and other research institutions that are now connected to IdREN will be able to share data faster with institutions of higher learning and research overseas and have access to private testing grounds for the network.

As part of the Indonesia G20 2022 sequence of events, this agreement was signed after the Digital Economy Working Group End (DEWG) was completed and before the Digital Economy Ministers Meeting (DEMM) began. In addition, it was witnessed by Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G. Plate and Minister for Digital Transformation of Japan, Kono Taro. Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan, Heri Akhmadi, and Secretary of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Prof. Tjitjik Srie Tjahjandarie were also present at the signing of the MoU.

According to Achmad Affandi, the President of IdREN, the 100 Gbps ARENA-PAC will boost infrastructure capabilities and hasten regional and international collaboration in education and research.

Prof. Jun Murai, co-director of ARENA-PAC, added that the 100 Gbps network to IdREN paved the way for a bright future for Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region. To build a brighter future, he also hopes that this network will facilitate collaboration between Indonesia and other Asia-Pacific nations as well as the rest of the world.
