Travelling to Karimunjawa Made Easy with Upcoming Direct Flights

Share:

Indonesia, an archipelago rich in natural beauty, is home to countless stunning tourist destinations. One such gem is Karimunjawa, a group of islands in the Java Sea, part of Jepara Regency in Central Java.

Known for its breathtaking marine landscapes, Karimunjawa is a favourite spot for travellers seeking tranquillity and untouched natural beauty.

However, getting to Karimunjawa has not always been easy. For instance, there are no direct buses from Jakarta to Jepara. But soon, travellers will have a more convenient option: direct flights to Karimunjawa.

At present, there are no direct flights from Jakarta or other major cities to Karimunjawa. Travellers typically fly to Semarang or Surabaya and then take a boat to the islands. This can be time-consuming and inconvenient, especially for international tourists.

Direct Flights to Karimunjawa to Open by April 2025

The good news is that Dewandaru Karimunjawa Airport is set to become operational by April 2025. This new airport will make Karimunjawa more accessible, allowing it to compete with other top tourist destinations in Indonesia. It will also provide a smoother travel experience for both local and international visitors.

As reported by Antara, the Central Java Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office has confirmed that an airline will soon open a flight route to Karimunjawa. This will significantly improve access to the islands, which are part of Indonesia’s National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN).

Agung Hariyadi, Head of the Central Java Disporapar, explained that the licensing process for the flight route is currently underway. If everything goes smoothly, the first flight to Karimunjawa will take off in April 2025.

He added, “The aircraft is an ATR with a capacity of 70 seats. If half of them, around 40 seats, are filled, it will be a return on capital. Because we have an interest, during the ‘trial’ period we provide stimulants, and we buy tickets for three months.”

With the new flight route, the government hopes to make it easier for tourists to visit Karimunjawa. Currently, most visitors rely on sea transport, which can be challenging, especially for foreign tourists who often get stranded in Jepara.

Tips for Choosing Flights to Karimunjawa

If you’re planning a trip to Karimunjawa, here are some tips to help you choose the best flight:

1. Check the Airline’s Official Website: Always verify the latest schedules and ticket prices on the airline’s official website.
2. Consider Travel Time: If you’re departing from a city other than Semarang or Surabaya, factor in potential transit times.
3. Book Early: Secure your tickets well in advance, especially if you’re travelling during peak season.

How to Get to Karimunjawa from Jakarta

If you’re planning a trip to Karimunjawa from Jakarta, here are two alternative travel options besides flying:

1. By Bus
Travelling by bus is one of the most affordable options, though it requires some connections. Here’s how:
– Book a bus ticket from Jakarta Terminal to Terboyo Terminal in Semarang.
– From Terboyo Terminal, take a local bus to Jepara Terminal (about 2 hours).
– Get off near Kartini Harbor, which is just 1.8 km from the terminal.
– At the harbour, book a boat ticket to the island.

2. By Train
Travelling by train is simpler than taking the bus. Follow these steps:
– Book a train ticket from Pasar Senen Station in Jakarta to Semarang Station.
– From Semarang Station, take an online motorcycle taxi or BRT to Terboyo Terminal.
– Head to Kartini Port and book a ferry ticket to the island.
