Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Hit Islamic Boarding School in Indonesia

Share:

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds struck parts of Mojokerto Regency, East Java, on Saturday afternoon, January 31, 2026, affecting residential areas, public facilities, and an Islamic boarding school.

The extreme weather hit the Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School, locally known as Nuris, located in Jabontegal Village, Pungging District. Several students and visitors panicked as the wind intensified and rain poured across the school complex.

Videos circulating on social media show strong winds sweeping through the courtyard of the boys’ dormitory while rain reduced visibility. The incident occurred during a scheduled visit by parents and guardians to the boarding school.

Students and Parents Seek Shelter as Structures Are Damaged

Footage shared online shows students and their guardians running for shelter as a tent installed in the courtyard of the boys’ dormitory was blown away by the wind.

The tent was damaged during the incident.

Another video recorded after the weather subsided shows damage in the courtyard of the girls’ dormitory. Several motorcycles appear to have been knocked over. A silver tent is seen collapsed, and wooden planks are scattered across the area.

Despite the sudden conditions, no injuries were reported. School officials confirmed that all students and visitors were safe following the incident. The treasurer of the Nuris Islamic Boarding School Foundation, H. Muhammad Ikhsan, said the strong winds began at approximately 4:00 pm local time.

“The tornado lasted for about half an hour. At that time, there was an event for parents to visit students at the Islamic boarding school. Local residents also felt the impact,” Ikhsan told BeritaJatim on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

Authorities Record Damage Across Several Villages

Ikhsan said that although the circulating videos caused public concern, the overall impact on the boarding school was limited.

“Despite the strong winds, the parents’ visitation event was not disrupted, and all students and parents were fine,” he said.

According to data released by the Mojokerto Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the impact of the strong winds was not limited to the boarding school. Damage was recorded across four villages: Jogodayoh, Bekatul, Jabon, and Guwo.

The BPBD reported that a total of 39 homes and public facilities were affected by the extreme weather event. The agency did not report any fatalities or serious injuries related to the incident.

Mojokerto Regency has experienced a series of weather disturbances in recent weeks, in line with seasonal patterns marked by heavy rainfall and strong winds across parts of East Java.

Local authorities have urged residents to remain alert during periods of extreme weather and to secure temporary structures, such as tents and lightweight roofing, that may be vulnerable to strong winds.
