Song Fa Bak Kut Teh: A Singaporean Dish From the 1960s

If you’re looking for a delicious and authentic Singaporean Bak Kut Teh, you shouldn’t look anywhere else except Song Fa Bak Kut Teh. We visited their branch at Central Park Mall, the interior feels like you’re doing roadside dining in one of the busiest street markets of Singapore.

The staff is very attentive, already handing out the menu book as we are all settling on our seats. They don’t have a lot of options on the menu as most of their dishes consist of pork and vegetables. Since their signature dish has to be the Bak Kut Teh, we ordered their Pork Ribs Soup and Pork Tenderloin Soup. Along with it, we also order a side dish of Salted Vegetables with white rice.

It doesn’t take too long for our food to arrive, as the staff serves us a bowlful of Pork Ribs and Tenderloin Soup. The first thing you’ll be able to smell is the pepper coming from the soup. The soup itself is quite peppery and spicy, you can really taste the pepper right away as it warms your stomach and throat almost immediately. The soup is addictive, you can’t stop taking a sip of it over and over again, plus, you can add a refill of the soup if you’re running out too!

The pork ribs are soft and tender, it falls easily from the bone and melts right on your tongue. Same with the tenderloin strips, it doesn’t feel too chewy and you can chew easily without any resistance at all. Truly, Bak Kut Teh, Salted Vegetables, and rice are a match made in heaven. The fermented bok choy is crunchy and salty just at the right amount. Eat it together with the pork, soup, and rice, it’s a burst of flavour!

By the end of your meal, you’ll feel a little bit refreshed and warmed up from the warm, peppery soup and filled with the delicious goodness of the pork ribs and tenderloin. The price itself isn’t too expensive, very affordable despite being one of the restaurants that have won the MICHELIN Guide Singapore Bib Gourmand Award for five years and other accolades too.
