At 9:41 PM and 11:52 PM local time on Thursday, 25th January 2024, two Bali earthquakes happened specifically in South Kuta and Klungkung. The sea area housed the epicentre of an earthquake with a magnitude of approximately 4.8, occurring at a depth of 100 kilometres, coordinates 8.99 south latitude, and 115.71 east longitudes, situated 57 km southeast of South Kuta, according to the latest information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

A few hours later, the second Bali earthquakes happened, with a magnitude of 3.0, and took place 42 kilometres southeast of Klungkung Regency. The epicentre of this earthquake was at 8.73 south latitude, 115.73 east longitude, and at a depth of 42 kilometres.

The Head of BMKG Region III Denpasar, Cahyono Nugroho, stated that the M 4.8 earthquake, attributable to subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate, was of a medium size. Reports on social media emerged swiftly as both tourists and the public perceived the seismic activity.

Besides Bali, the earthquake was also sensed in several areas like Mataram City, East Lombok, West Lombok, and Central Lombok. Cahyono highlighted that, up to the present moment, no reports of damage resulting from the earthquake have been received. Tsunami modelling based on tectonic earthquake sources indicates an absence of tsunami potential.

Cahyono urged the public to remain composed, awaiting official information from BMKG. Additionally, he also prompts everyone to report to the government if any building cracks or damage is caused by the earthquake.
