The Jakarta Provincial Government will switch off lights across several major roads, government buildings, and iconic landmarks for one hour on Saturday, 13 June 2026, as part of its Environment Day energy conservation campaign.
The initiative will take place from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm WIB and is intended to encourage residents and businesses to reduce electricity consumption while raising awareness about environmental protection.
Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH), Dudi Gardesi, said the campaign is a simple yet meaningful way to promote energy efficiency and reduce emissions.
“Save energy and reduce emissions, turn off the lights for 60 minutes in celebration of Environment Day,” Dudi said in an official statement to the media, on Thursday, 11 June 2026.
According to information shared by the Jakarta Provincial Government through its official channels, the simultaneous lights-out action will be carried out across all five administrative municipalities of the capital.
Major Roads and Government Buildings Included
The one-hour blackout will apply to buildings and facilities owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government, with the exception of healthcare facilities such as hospitals, community health centres, and clinics, which will continue operating as normal.
A number of private-sector properties, including commercial buildings, shopping centres, restaurants, hotels, and apartment complexes, are also expected to participate in the campaign.
Several major roads across Jakarta will be affected during the programme.
In Central Jakarta, lights will be switched off along Jalan Sudirman from Dukuh Atas to the Sampoerna Strategic Building, Jalan MH Thamrin, the Medan Merdeka area, including North Medan Merdeka in front of the Presidential Palace, and Jalan Gerbang Pemuda to Jalan Asia Afrika.
The Jakarta City Hall courtyard and the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office will also take part.
In North Jakarta, the affected locations include Jalan Yos Sudarso, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, and the North Jakarta Mayor’s Office complex.
East Jakarta will see lights turned off at Jalan Dr Sumarno, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, and the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office complex.
Meanwhile, in West Jakarta, the programme covers Jalan Daan Mogot, Jalan Kembangan Raya in front of the West Jakarta Mayor’s Office, and the West Jakarta Mayor’s Office complex.
In South Jakarta, lights will be switched off along Jalan Prapanca Raya, Jalan Gerbang Pemuda to Jalan Asia Afrika, Jalan Sudirman from the Sampoerna Strategic Building to Patung Pemuda, Jalan HR Rasuna Said, and the South Jakarta Mayor’s Office.
Monas and Other Landmarks to Go Dark
Several of Jakarta’s best-known landmarks will also participate in the campaign.
These include Jakarta City Hall, the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia, the Youth Statue, the Heroes Statue, and the General Sudirman Statue.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has also called on residents to take part by switching off lights and electrical appliances that are not being used during the designated hour.
Officials said the programme forms part of the city’s ongoing efforts to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions.
Data released by the Jakarta Provincial Government showed that a similar lights-out action held on 25 April 2025 resulted in electricity savings of 96.91 MWh, cost savings of Rp140.2 million, and a reduction of 77.53 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
The administration hopes public participation in this year’s initiative will contribute to further energy savings.
