Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung plans to expand the capital’s Car Free Day programme by adding Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said in Kuningan, South Jakarta, as a new location.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is also reviewing the possibility of changing the operating hours of Car Free Day activities in the city.
Pramono announced the plan during a statement at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday, 6 May 2026.
“We will also prepare Rasuna Said to become a car-free day like Sudirman-Thamrin,” Pramono said.
The governor stated that the additional location aims to provide residents with more options for outdoor activities and exercise. At present, the main Car Free Day area is concentrated along Jalan Sudirman and Jalan M.H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta.
The provincial government has not yet announced when the new route will officially begin operating.
Provincial Government Reviews CFD Operating Hours
In addition to expanding locations, the Jakarta administration is evaluating possible changes to the operating hours of Car Free Day activities.
Pramono said the government is still conducting a review before making an official announcement regarding the schedule adjustment.
“Including, I will announce changes to the hours for Car Free Day at the appropriate time,” he said, as quoted by Detik.
The governor did not provide further details about the proposed timetable or whether the duration of Car Free Day activities would be extended.
According to Pramono, the review is intended to ensure that public spaces can be used more effectively by residents across different areas of Jakarta.
“We will also make adjustments, including possibly changing the timing of Car Free Day to ensure optimal public use,” he said.
The Jakarta administration is currently studying several aspects related to traffic flow, public mobility, and the effectiveness of public space management before implementing any changes.
Car Free Day has become one of Jakarta’s regular public programmes, attracting residents who take part in sports, cycling, walking, and community activities on weekends.
Expansion Aims to Support Healthy Lifestyle
Pramono said the expansion of public spaces forms part of the Jakarta Provincial Government’s strategy to encourage healthier lifestyles among residents.
He explained that Jalan Rasuna Said was selected to help distribute public activity more evenly and reduce crowd density in the Sudirman-Thamrin area, especially around the Bundaran HI corridor.
“With the addition of Car Free Day locations, Jakarta residents have more options for healthy activities in the capital,” Pramono said.
The governor added that the policy is expected to support broader environmental and urban programmes being developed by the provincial government.
According to him, the expansion of public spaces will also be integrated with environmental initiatives, including waste management and public cleanliness campaigns.
Pramono said the government wants to create more accessible and balanced public areas across the city while improving the urban environment.
“Hopefully, Jakarta residents will be healthier,” he added.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has not yet announced technical details regarding traffic engineering, road closures, or coordination with public transport operators related to the proposed new Car Free Day route on Jalan Rasuna Said.
