The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has confirmed that it will suspend telecommunications services, including the internet and broadcasting, during Nyepi 2025. This marks the seventh consecutive year of service shutdown during Nyepi.

Komdigi’s Director General of Digital Infrastructure, Wayan Toni Supriyanto, stated that the suspension of telecommunications and broadcasting services will last for 24 hours, from 29th to 30th March 2025.

“During Nyepi, from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning, both internet and broadcasting services will be completely shut down,” Wayan said, as quoted by Antara on Thursday, 20th March 2025.

The Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, also assured that her department would ensure a stable network during both Lebaran and Nyepi 2025.

“Communication is a primary necessity, especially during homecoming and major celebrations. We want people to stay connected without issues, with more affordable rates and optimal network quality,” she said during a press conference at the Ministry of Communication and Digital office in Jakarta on Thursday, 20th March 2025.

The temporary blackout of internet services, as well as television and radio broadcasts on Nyepi Day, is implemented to honour Hindus observing the sacred day in Bali. It is intended to allow Hindus to worship in a more solemn and undisturbed manner.

The Significance of Nyepi for Balinese Hindus

Nyepi Day is a sacred day of silence for Hindus, celebrated annually to mark the Saka New Year. On this occasion, Balinese Hindus partake in meaningful and solemn rituals, observed by the Hindu community each year.

Nyepi is characterised by 24 hours of absolute silence across the island of Bali. During this time, all public activities are strictly prohibited, including travel, work, and even the consumption of food outside the home.

During Nyepi, Hindus are required to abstain from the following:

  • Amati Geni: Refraining from lighting fires or lamps, including symbolic inner fires of passion, to practise self-control.
  • Amati Karya: Avoiding work or any form of activity, both offline and online.
  • Amati Lelungan: Not travelling outside the home, including to public areas and roads.
  • Amati Lelanguan: Abstaining from entertainment or any form of leisure activities.

These prohibitions are observed for a full 24 hours, from 6 a.m. following the initial ceremony until 6 a.m. the next day.
