Hot Weather Sweeps Jakarta, Health Office Warns of Heatstroke Risk

The Jakarta Health Office has urged residents to remain vigilant as extreme heat continues to affect the capital, warning that prolonged exposure to high temperatures may lead to serious health complications.

Head of the office Ani Ruspitawati said the current weather conditions pose risks beyond general discomfort, as excessive heat can disrupt the body’s ability to regulate temperature.

“In general, hot weather can trigger dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heatstroke,” Ani said on Sunday, as reported by MediaIndonesia.

Health authorities explained that when the body’s cooling system is unable to cope with rising temperatures, individuals may experience various heat-related illnesses.

Aside from dehydration and heatstroke, prolonged exposure to extreme heat can also cause dizziness, muscle cramps, and fatigue, while potentially worsening existing cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

In addition, extended exposure to direct sunlight may lead to skin irritation and long-term dermatological damage.

Vulnerable Groups

The health office noted that several groups face a higher risk of heat-related illness. These include outdoor workers who are exposed to the sun for long periods, as well as children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals.

Authorities advised these groups to reduce outdoor activity during peak daytime temperatures whenever possible.

Preventive Measures

To reduce the risk of heat-related illness, the Jakarta Health Office recommended that residents maintain adequate hydration by drinking water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until they feel thirsty.

Residents are also advised to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help the body release heat more efficiently. When outdoor activities are unavoidable, the use of protective items such as hats or umbrellas is recommended to minimise direct exposure to sunlight.

The health office further advised the public to limit the consumption of caffeine and foods high in sodium, as both can contribute to dehydration.
Maintaining a cooler indoor environment is also considered important.

Residents are encouraged to use fans or air conditioning to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heat-related stress on the body.

Authorities urged members of the public to seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of heat exhaustion or other heat-related health problems.
