Government to Take Initiative Identifying Monkeypox

Share:

July 28, 2022 – The government will aid initiatives to increase the ability of health and laboratory officers to identify the monkeypox epidemic that has spread throughout Asian nations.

Agus Suprapto, the Deputy for Health Quality Enhancement and Development Coordination at the Ministry of Human Development and Cultural Affairs, stated that in light of infection cases that have been reported in various countries, improving detection capacity is crucial to halting the spread of monkeypox.

The Deputy of the Coordinating Ministry stated that the health officials’ capacity to identify monkeypox may be improved by the intensity of training. It is especially important for officers at all Indonesian entry points, in primary healthcare facilities, and for frontline healthcare professionals to handle the disease.

Though Indonesia Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that the smallpox vaccine can provide protection from monkeypox, Suprapto still emphasized the urgent necessity for information dissemination regarding monkeypox prevention methods. Since the outbreak was deemed a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO,

The representative from the ministry added that since the monkeypox disease has been listed as a global health issue, there needs to be a greater emphasis on spreading awareness among locals. As a result, locals are sufficiently informed on the disease that causes monkeypox, how it is transmitted, and how to avoid and treat it.

Masdalina Pane, head of the professional development department at the Indonesian Epidemiologists Association (PAEI), had earlier urged locals to take proactive steps to stop the spread of monkeypox. She pointed out that the infection with the orthopoxvirus was what produced the monkeypox illness.

She further stated that although the symptoms of the illness vary from person to person and have an incubation period of 5 to 21 days, they are comparable to those of other infectious diseases. Fever, headache, muscle soreness, swollen lymph nodes, and the development of a rash on the skin are typical symptoms.
