Earthquake 5,8 Magnitude Shakes Bali

23rd August 2022 – An earthquake with 5,8 magnitude shakes Bali on Monday (22/8) at 4:36 PM WITA. The earthquake was centred 74 kilometres southeast of South Kuta, Badung Regency.

The point of the earthquake was at coordinates 9,36 South Latitude and 115,59 East Longitude at a depth of 124 kilometres.

The Centre for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region III Denpasar said the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

Although the centre of the earthquake was in South Bali, the tremors were felt up to North Bali. The exact damage caused is still unknown. However, this earthquake managed to shock several residents.

“I was shocked, I was sitting then everything shakes suddenly,” said Yoga Sariada, a resident of Desa Sambangan, Sukasada District, Buleleng Regency, Bali.

Another resident in Kaliuntu Village, Buleleng sub-district, Buleleng Regency, Agung Kurnia, said the same thing about the tremors. During the tremor, he briefly panicked and run out of his kos-san (rent room) located on the second floor to the lower ground.

“The tremor was felt twice. The first one is a little bit weak, the second one is much stronger. I saw the windows and doors shake. Panicking, I immediately go down to the lower ground,” he explained.

The tremors are also felt by residents at Mataram City, NTB. Residents claimed that the tremors felt like trucks passing through that shakes the windows.

So far, there have not been any damages reported caused by the earthquake.

Earthquake tremors felt up to Banyuwangi

The Volcanological Survey of Indonesia (PVMBG) officer of Raung Volcano Observation Post (PGA) in Banyuwangi said that the earthquake does not affect the volcanic activity of Gunung Raung.

Yusuf Arif, the Head of the Prevention Section at the Banyuwangi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), said that the earthquake tremors were felt in almost all areas of Banyuwangi.

Up to this point, the BPBD Banyuwangi has yet to receive any reports regarding the damages caused by the earthquake.
