An Earthquake with a Magnitude of 7.4 Rocked Bali This Morning

An earthquake was felt in Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday, the 29th of August 2023, at 02:55:32 WIB. From information obtained from bmkg.go.id, the earthquake was centred 180 km southeast of Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, at latitude -4.38, longitude 116.90, magnitude 7.4, and depth 10 Km.

The Chief Executive of the Bali Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, I Made Rentin, said there was no damage to buildings due to the 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency has yet to receive any complaints from the public regarding damaged buildings or infrastructure.

“So far, there has been no significant impact caused by the earthquake,” Rentin told local media on Tuesday, the 29th of August 2023. Although there have been no reports of significant damage, the Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency, including the Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency in districts or cities, continues to monitor buildings or infrastructure on the Island of the Gods.

Head of Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Mataram Geophysics Station Ardhianto Septiadhi explained the epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.94° South Latitude and 116.57° East Longitude.

Ardhianto explained that the earthquake could be felt from Bali to Trenggalek, East Java. However, the BMKG has yet to receive any reports of damage caused by the earthquake. “The earthquake has no potential for a tsunami,” said Ardhianto,

The results of the BMKG observations stated that until 03.22 a.m., WIB, two aftershocks measured M 6.1 and M 6.5. “The two aftershocks had similar sources and depths to the main earthquake,” said Ardhianto.

Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Centre of the BMKG Daryono said the effects of the earthquake were also felt in several areas in Bali, including Kuta, Gianyar and Tabanan. However, the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami and no damage to buildings or infrastructure.
